Advisory: Dalai Lama presides March 2 at Tibetan New Year

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will preside at Tibetan New Year Celebration at Augsburg

WHAT:Thousands of Tibetan Americans will celebrate Losar, the Tibetan New Year, on March 2 at Augsburg College. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will preside over the Losar ceremony. It is the first time in the life of His Holiness, since exile, that he will observe Losar outside of India.

WHEN:Sunday, March 2

  • 9-11 a.m.: His Holiness presides over Losar ceremony
  • 11 a.m.-5 p.m.: Community celebration featuring singing, dancing

BACKGROUND:Losar, the Tibetan New Year, includes a formal ceremony at which His Holiness will preside, accompanied by Buddhist monks dressed in holy robes. The historic service, which will be delivered in the Tibetan language, primarily is open to the people of Tibet who live in the United States. The ceremony is expected to draw more than 3,000 people from Tibet who live in the United States.

RELATED EVENTS:His Holiness will be in the Twin Cities as part of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum where he is the keynote speaker on March 1. He also is scheduled to speak March 2 at a private event at Macalester College.

TICKETS: The Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota is the official coordinator of the ceremony. Tickets to attend Losar also will be made available via TAFM and will be distributed first to members of the Tibetan American community. There is no translation service provided.
