Got questions? Ask Cody.
Registering for classes can cause a bit of anxiety for any student. When do I register? What if there isn't an open seat in a class I want? How do I get into a closed class? How do I register for an internship? How do I know I'm taking the right classes for my major? For graduation?
These are just a few of the common questions many students are faced with at least once in their college careers. In addition to the knowledgeable advisers in the Enrollment Center, Auggies now have another source for finding answers to these and many more questions—peer advising.
Senior Cody Warren, an accounting and religion major, has worked in the Enrollment Center since his first year at Augsburg. He says peer advising is just one more way to make advising accessible for students.
To help students get ready for registration (beginning Apr. 6), Warren will offer walk-up advising Mar. 31, Apr. 2, 7, and 9 from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. be in the Christensen Center lobby. Students who visit him and ask a "meaningful question about registration or advising" will be entered into a drawing to win a gift card to the Augsburg bookstore.
"The great thing about peer advising is that I can help students by drawing on my own personal experience," Warren says. "I've been where they are. I know the ins and outs of being a student at Augsburg."
His personal experience helps Warren offer advice about when to take courses, how to choose a major or minor, and the best resources for finding advising information at Augsburg. As a peer adviser, he is also trained to answer specific questions related to the Core Curriculum and requirements for all majors.
Augsburg has successfully utilized the experience and expertise of current students for several years through its Enrollment Center. There, student counselors and full-time staff assist all students and parents with registration and financial matters.
Ask Cody
Q: Why do I need to meet with my faculty adviser?
A: Your faculty adviser has the best information about what's happening in your major or department. As your adviser gets to know you, he or she can also offer great advice on careers, internships, research, and graduate school.
Best Advice: Make appointments to meet with your faculty advisers throughout the semester, not just before registration.
Q: How do I know what classes I've taken and which ones I still need to take?
A: Fill out a major checklist and general education checklist as you progress through your courses. Your adviser and the Academic Advising staff can help if you have questions.
Best Advice: All major checklists are now available on the Advising website.
Q: Do most people only have one major and never change it?
A: Many students change their majors several times! Your ideas and views change as you take new courses, explore different careers, and meet new people. This is a natural part of college—feel free to change your major!
Q: Is it best to take all your general education courses first, then take major requirements?
A: No, spread out your general education courses over your time at Augsburg. By doing this, you can blend upper-division courses with lower-division courses and even out your course load. Plus, you have the added variety in your semester!
Best Advice: Get to know upper-class students. They are a great resource for choosing classes, professors, and majors. You might even get a good restaurant recommendation from them!
