Make your voice count -- VOTE!

OCTOBER 27, 2008

picture of Antonio OrtegaOn November 4, millions of Americans will head to the polls to cast a vote in the 2008 presidential election, arguably one of the most historic elections of our time. Voters will also select representatives for seats in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives as well as state representatives, judges, and other local offices.

According to Garry Hesser, Sabo Professor of Citizenship and Learning at Augsburg, a variety of organizations are working to support student involvement in the election on a nonpartisan basis. "Campus Compact has established a nonpartisan initiative to boost voter registration and education among college students," says Hesser. The organization has created a comprehensive website offering key resources, tools, and models from around the country. Go to www.compact.org/vote. Where do resident students vote?

Most people vote in the neighborhood where they live. Minnesota election laws allow students who live on campus to vote at a campus precinct or at a polling place near the campus. Augsburg has submitted residence hall lists to the Office of Elections and Voter Registration to enable resident students to vote at Seward Square Apartments, 2121 9th Street South. Students must present a valid photo ID (Augsburg ID is acceptable).

In order to vote, you must be at least 18 years of age on election day and a U.S. citizen.

Most polling places will open at 7 a.m. on Nov. 4 and remain open until 8 p.m. If there is a line at 8 p.m., the election judge will identify the last person in the line and he or she will be the last person allowed to vote at that location. The Secretary of State suggests voting in the afternoon when most polling places aren't as busy. For more information or to find your precinct, go to the Minnesota Secretary of State website at www.sos.state.mn.us

Registering on Nov. 4

If you are not registered to vote you may do so at your local polling place on election day. You will need to provide proof of residence, such as a phone bill or tuition and fees statement showing your name and current address. Bring a photo ID with you: Minnesota driver's license or state ID, Augsburg ID, tribal ID, or notice of late registration from your county auditor.

Reflections on the Elections

Martin Sabo and Lyall Schwartzkopf will reflect on the outcome of the election on Monday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Center, Room 100. This bi-partisan team will have lots to offer and be open to questions.
