Washington Center thanks Augsburg

SEPTEMBER 3, 2008

Picture of President Pribbenow Recognizing Augsburg's commitments to service learning and civic engagement, Eugene Alpert, senior vice president of The Washington Center, presented a gift to President Pribbenow after this morning's presidential seminar discussion in Hoversten Chapel. The plaque commemorates the partnership between Augsburg and The Washington Center, a partnership President Pribbenow said dates back several years and will continue in the future.

Accepting the plaque, Pribbenow said he was pleased with the College's role in the seminar because it has allowed Augsburg to express its commitments to service and engagement, as Alpert noted, and also to serve our neighbors through our hospitality.

In December 2007, Augsburg College was chosen by The Washington Center to host the 2008 Presidential Academic Seminar Series in conjunction with the Republican National Convention. More than 150 college students from across the country, faculty, and Washington Center staff are on Augsburg's campus through September 4 participating in seminars and internships related to the convention. Twenty-four Augsburg students are included in the seminar.

In addition to academic sessions and field placements, the seminar has featured daily forums including speakers such as columnist Arianna Huffington, Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr, and Secret Service Agent David O'Connor. On Thursday, September 4 at 10:30 a.m., Augsburg will welcome Nancy Theis, Special Assistant to the President and Director of Presidential Correspondence, and Sergio Gor, former White House intern, for a joint presentation in Hoversten Chapel in Foss Center. Howard Dean, Chairman of the National Democratic Committee, will hold a rally at 12 noon on the Urness Hall lawn.
