"Between the Past and the Future"

SEPTEMBER 5, 2008

Picture of Moroney's art exhibit Visiting ceramic artist Kathleen Moroney opens her light installation "Between the Past and the Future" at Augsburg College on September 6. The installation in Sateren Music Hall, which will be on display for two years, features lit porcelain globes that descend at varying intervals from ceiling to floor. The layout, which is inspired by the cyclic flow of water, and the individual slipcast pieces, which are based on the form of an hourglass globe, express and capture the rhythmic movement of time.

"Between the Past and the Future" is the second ceramic installation that Moroney has created this year. It follows a site specific installation in Ireland entitled "Second Generation," which was a temporary work of public art commissioned by the Clare County Council's Public Art Program to celebrate the opening of artist studios in the town of Tulla. Using the original cobblestones found on the renovated site of former horse stables, she created 191 white porcelain replicas to mark each year from the opening of the stables in 1817 to the present day. Members of the local community took part in the slipcasting of the stones, and visitors to the exhibition were invited to take away one of the porcelain cobblestones--a symbol of the past and present.

Moroney was born in New York and educated in the U.S. and Ireland, completing an MA in ceramics at Limerick Institute of Technology, in 1998. After graduating she returned to live in the U.S. for eight years, where she took part in numerous art residencies, exhibitions, and public art projects. In 2005 she was the recipient of a Jerome Foundation Grant and a residency at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis. There she explored firing techniques and created a new body of work that was featured in the solo exhibition "Nesting Ground" at Augsburg's Christensen Center Art Gallery in summer of 2006. Since that time the artist has been living in County Clare and lecturing at Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design.
