Student artists respond visually to King’s The World House essay
As part of Augsburg’s ongoing commitment to exploring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., during the fall of 2006, students in Tara Sweeney’s Beginning Drawing and Watercolor Painting classes put ink and color to paper to create a mixed media, visual response to the concept of World/House.
The striking results are currently on display in the Foss Chapel Atrium and the Student Art Gallery in the Christensen Center.
Challenged to artistically respond using all of their senses, students began by selecting words or phrases that represented each of their individual sensory reactions to World/House. The students compiled all of the words and phrases, performed a group reading, and then got to work creating.
Professor Sweeney reports, “This was a tall order and the students were amazing. The collaborative creative energy they generated in the studio was impressive.” Students were surprised at where the assignment took them creatively: “If I let myself believe it was going to work, it came to life.” “Seeing so many different ways of drawing the concept world/house helped me feel there was no way to be wrong.”
The works will be on display throughout the week. The image shown is a mixed-media drawing by Ben Austin.
