Award-winning Native American filmmaker Sandra Sunrising Osawa will screen her film "Maria Tallchief:  America’s First Prima Ballerina" on March 14 in Science 123 from 7 to 9 p.m. as part of Augsburg’s Native American Film Series. Prior to the screening there will be a reception in the Century Room at 5:30 p.m.

An independent filmmaker, writer, and member of the Makah Indian Nation in Washington State, Osawa’s documentaries have been broadcast on NBC, PBS, and the Learning Channel and have been screened nationally and abroad, including at the Sundance Film Festival, Vienna Film Festival, and Native American Film & Video Festival.

"Maria Tallchief" documents the ballet icon’s journey from an Osage Indian community to the center stages of New York, Paris, and Russia. Tallchief is acknowledged as the most technically accomplished ballerina ever produced in America.

Osawa’s visit to campus is sponsored by the ACTC Women’s Studies Program, American Indian Studies, Augsburg’s Film Program, Fine Arts, Women’s Resource Center, The Circle, and Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

The event is free and open to the public.
