Physician Assistant students have a heart

Feb. 4 , 2007

Blood pressure checksHeart disease is the #1 killer of women over the age of 25.

Once thought to be primarily a disease of men, students from Augsburg’s Physician’s Assistant (P.A.) program are joining forces with the Go Red for Women campaign of the American Heart Association to help women take control of their own heart health.

On National Wear Red Day (February 2), students stationed themselves in the Christensen Center on campus to help raise awareness of the disease and what women can do to help prevent it. They also offered free blood pressure checks and dark chocolate (found to be beneficial to one’s health).

“We really want to get people thinking about the simple, beneficial lifestyle changes that they can make,” says first-year P.A. student Kristine Kunnari. Changes can be as small as getting 30 minutes of exercise a day, adding fruits and vegetable to your diet and limiting your salt intake. More information can be found at www.goredforwomen.org.

The Augsburg Physician Assistant program is the only program of its kind in Minnesota. The program educates generalist physician assistants oriented toward service to underserved populations, both in rural and urban settings. For more information on the program visit www.augsburg.edu/pa/index.html.
