Campus grounds explode with color

Jubegoniane 25, 2007

Those who spend their summer at Augsburg College will notice that as the summer grows longer and hotter, the campus grounds grow more alive with color. This is thanks to Bruce Rowe, Groundskeeper, and his crew of eight student gardeners.

For 26 years Bruce has been making the grounds grand and he reports that he still loves doing it. Every year he recruits eight or so students to help him mow, trim, plant, weed, and nurture the Augsburg gardens. And making sure that the campus is in top form is no small feat. This year alone the crew has planted:

  • 200 Rudbeckia 'Prairie Sun' in the Quad
  • 64 Gazania Tiger Mix by the Science building
  • 64 Blue Salvia planted on the north corner of New Hall
  • 300 Impatiens planted by Old Main
  • 360 red Salvia planted in various locations
  • 96 dark blue Petunia planted by Si Melby

Bruce’s favorite flowers are the 72 tuberous begonias planted under the skyway between Memorial Hall and Lindell Library. "They are gorgeous, and they require minimal maintenance," he says.

The next time you cross the Quad or trek off to Si Melby, pause a moment to enjoy the bursts of color that populate our campus. And give a shout-out to the folks who make it happen.
