Chris Brown named MIAC Coach of the Year

Chris Brown, Aaron JohnsonAugsburg men's hockey head coach Chris Brown was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Coach of the Year, and forward Aaron Johnson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) was selected as MIAC Player of the Year, in conference awards announced recently.

In his first year as the Auggies head coach, Brown led the Auggies to a 12-10-4 record and third-place conference finish (9-3-4), as the Auggies clinched a berth in the MIAC playoffs for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The record was a three-win improvement overall and four-win improvement in league play from last season.

Brown returned to Augsburg last season as an assistant coach under Mike Schwartz, a position he also served in during the 1996-97 season. After leaving Augsburg in 1997, he had served as assistant coach at Division I Alaska-Anchorage for three years, then served as head coach at Marian (Wis.) for four seasons (2000-04) and at Hamline for one season (2004-05). His career coaching record is now 81-66-12.

Aaron Johnson, a three-time All-MIAC honoree and All-American first-team selection last season, became the first Auggie to earn MIAC Player of the Year honors in men's hockey since Jaro Cesky earned the honor in the 2002-03 season. Earlier this season, he was also selected to compete in the NCAA Pontiac Frozen Four Skills Challenge, to be held at the NCAA Division I men's hockey Frozen Four in St. Louis, Mo., on April 6, one of just two NCAA Division III players to be selected among the 32 participants.
