Velkommen Jul and Advent Vespers usher in the holiday season at Augsburg

Dec. 3, 2006

The holiday season officially began this week at Augsburg College with the celebration of Velkommen Jul and continuing with four majestic services of music and liturgy at the 27th Annual Advent Vespers, Dec. 1 and 2, at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis.

Velkommen Jul is a long-standing tradition at Augsburg, ushering in the Christmas season Scandinavian style. The celebration begins in Chapel and moves to the Christensen Center where the Augsburg Associates, dressed in traditional and colorful bunads, serve Scandinavian holiday treats and sell handcrafted items.

The bunad is the traditional Norwegian costume that is local to traditional Norwegian districts. The elaborate designs are usually hand embroider and accented with scarves, handmade jewelry, and shawls.

Advent Vespers is one of the largest holiday music events in the Twin Cities, combining more than 300 participants including three choirs - The Augsburg College Choir, The Riverside Singers and The Masterworks Chorale, instrumentalists, readers and a full liturgical party. All four services were sold out this year.
