Auggie men’s and women’s soccer teams make MIAC playoffs

Oct. 30, 2006

soccer playoffsThe Augsburg College men's and women's soccer teams have qualified for this week’s (Oct. 30) Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs. Augsburg is the only school in the MIAC to have both its men's and women's teams in the conference's soccer playoffs this season.

The Auggie men, with a record of 13-2-3 overall and 5-2-3 in MIAC play under head coach Greg Holker, qualified for the MIAC postseason playoffs for the first time in program history (the MIAC has had postseason playoffs since 2003).

Augsburg finished the regular season with its most victories since its MIAC championship season of 1975, and claimed its most points in league play since its last MIAC title season of 1980.  Perhaps the most amazing facet of the men’s playoff run is that it is being accomplished by one of the youngest teams in the MIAC. The 34-player roster features just four seniors and four juniors, to go along with 13 sophomores and 13 freshmen.

The Auggie women, with a record of 10-5-2 overall and 7-3-1 in league play, qualified for the four-team conference postseason tournament for the third straight season under head coach Mike Navarre. This program has become one of the most consistent squads in the MIAC in recent years. The Auggies have reached the four-team conference playoffs in three of the four seasons that the playoffs have been held.

"I'm very proud of our program. The MIAC is one of the best conferences in the country. To make the playoffs three years in a row is a significant achievement," Navarre said. "We look forward to the semifinals. We've played each team well this season and will be excited to play."
