Augsburg students present research in Chicago

Nov. 12, 2006
Attending the conference: Professor Tracy Bibelnieks, Ben Sonquist, Alison Heussler and Professor Ben Stottrup.

Senior Ben Sonquist and sophomore Alison Heussler presented the results of their summer research in lipid biophysics at the Annual Argonne Symposium for Undergraduate Research in Science, Engineering and Mathematics the weekend of Nov. 4 at the Argonne National Labs in Chicago. Accompanying them were Professors Ben Stottrup, physics, and Tracy Bibelnieks, mathematics.

Sonquist, a biology and secondary education major, and Heussler, a physics major, also had an opportunity to tour the Advanced Photon Source and Linear Accelerator at Argonne.

“I think it is a perfect example of how a student-faculty research project gives our undergrads an opportunity to do exciting things outside of the classroom,” Stottrup said.

The Lipid Biophysics Group at Augsburg College is dedicated to two objectives: to study and understand the physical properties of lipids that contribute to their biological utility in membranes, and to train and excite undergraduates for future careers in interdisciplinary science.
