Math + Science = Fun

July 26, 2006
Gems and Gise

Students in grades 4 - 12 are spending part of their summer vacation raising monarch butterflies, building the Mars terrain, programming robots and even learning about the chemistry of cosmetics - all on the Augsburg College campus. The Girls in Engineering, Mathematics and Science (GEMS) and Guys in Science and Engineering (GISE) programs are designed to develop confidence in and a positive attitude towards math, science and technology. The students, about 100 girls and 35 boys are from the Minneapolis Public School District. The GISE program is in its first year.

Augsburg students, as well as former GEMS students serve as mentors. Such opportunities not only give the younger students valuable opportunities, but the Augsburg students valuable teaching experiences while building their own confidence and knowledge in math and science.
