Women of the World and War: Focus on Somalia

Join Women Against Military Madness on Thursday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in the Foss Center for "Women of the World and War," the third of a series. The event will focus on women of Somalia, and will include a presentation by Somalian native, Nadifa Osama.

Nadifa Osman, a native of Somalia, began to demonstrate an avid sense of awareness and dedication to human rights and social justice during the totalitarian regime (1969-1990). From 1979 to 1985, she worked as a volunteer in her homeland of Somalia, working on poverty assessment and community empowerment projects with a humanitarian NGO. Ms. Osman immigrated before the civil war and found herself, as well as her fleeing people, displaced. From the time she arrived in Minnesota in 1999, she has operated programs to address the many needs of Somali women and girls who have recently immigrated to the Twin Cities, which has one of the largest Somali populations in the United States. She is founder and Executive Director of the Women of Africa Resource Development Association.

Ms. Osman will speak to the effects of war on the women and children of Somalia, both those who have remained in Somalia and those who have immigrated to the U.S. Sponsored by Women Against Military Madness. Co-sponsored by: Augsburg Women's Resource Center, Women's Studies and Coalition for Student Activism.
