Gloria Steinem to speak at Augsburg College

Sept. 23, 2004

Gloria Steinem posterWriter and activist Gloria Steinem will speak at Augsburg College, Tuesday, September 28, at 12 p.m.
Steinem's speech is free and open to the public and will be held in the Christensen Center's East Commons at 720 22nd Ave. S.

Steinem is a leading advocate in the women's rights movement and is one of the co-founders of Ms. magazine, the first national women's magazine run by women that aims at dealing with contemporary issues from a feminist perspective.

Steinem's visit will focus on issues of women's involvement in the electoral process, chiefly surrounding the approaching 2004 election. Her appearance at Augsburg College was facilitated by longtime Minnesota activist Koryne Horbal, former Ambassador to the United Nations for Women's Issues during the Carter administration and founder of the DFL Feminist Caucus. Horbal currently serves as a special consultant to Augsburg's Anne Pederson Women's Resource Center.

Former Minnesota State Senator Julie Sabo, a 1988 Augsburg alumna from Minneapolis, will introduce Steinem at the event.
