Hispanic/Latino Student Services program celebrates 10 years

May. 3, 2004

Augsburg's Hispanic/Latino Student Services program concluded a yearlong celebration of its 10th anniversary with a gala dinner April 27. Program director Emiliano Chagil welcomed guests, who included faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the College.

The festive evening featured live mariachi music, Mexican and Latin American cuisine, and an awards presentation to those who have impacted and helped shape the program. Honorees included President William V. Frame, president emeritus Charles Anderson, and Eloisa Echávez ('94, '98 MEL), who was the program's founder and director for its first six years.

Guest speakers included alumnus Charles Barton '03, international relations senior Dara Fernandez-Perez '04, and campus associate pastor Sonja Hagander, who provided the evening's invocation.

Established in 1993, the Hispanic/Latino program is the newest of the four programs that provide services for ethnic populations at Augsburg. In collaboration with other programs and departments, the program offers students individualized attention in areas including assistance with admissions, financial aid, registration processes, academic advising, personal counseling, and advocacy. All students also receive assistance with internships, employment, and community referrals. While most activity in the program involves day students, weekend and graduate students also take advantage of the program's services and community networking.
