Theatre Arts Department Presents One-Act Plays by Harold Pinter

Jan. 28, 2002

The theatre arts department will present two highly entertaining dark comedies written by Harold Pinter and directed by Martha Johnson. A Night Out and Night School run Feb. 1 - 10 in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater.

The plays were first performed in 1960 as radio and television drama and reflect Pinter's dark sense of humor and uncanny insight into communication (and lack of communication) between human beings.

Critic Martin Esslin lauds A Night Out for its "brilliantly realistic dialogue" and exploration of themes of domination, surrender, and resignationpresenting "an elegant and subtle set of variations on man's confrontation with aspects of the female principle." Night School, which he believes to contain "some of Pinter's funniest dialogue" explores the typical Pinter themes of "a room and a struggle for its possession" and "the net of lies by which people mutually obscure their real selves from each other.

The plays will be held February 1, 2, 7, 8, 9 at 7 p.m. and February 3, 10 at 2 p.m in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater. Ticket reservations can be made beginning two weeks prior to opening night. For reservations or more information, call 612-330-1257.
