"Islam and Christianity: Religious Resources for Living with Differences"

Amin Kader and Mark Swanson will approach religious differences from the perspectives of their own faith traditions. Highlighting the resources they find in Islam and Christianity for promoting understanding, they will advocate living together in peace as Christians and Muslims have already done during certain periods of history.

They will also share their experiences and appreciation for the other’s religious tradition and discuss how reconciliation and healing can be possible even in the context of religious difference.

Mark Swanson Associate Professor of Islamic Studies and Director of the Islamic Studies Program, Luther Seminary

Dr. Mark Swanson teaches Islamic studies, and early and medieval church history at Luther Seminary. His research centers on Arabic-language literature of the Middle Eastern churches, especially between the 8th and 12th centuries AD. Previously, he taught New Testament and Arabic Christian studies at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo.

He received a B.S. degree from California Institute of Technology, and M.Div. degree from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pa., and an M.A. in religious studies from Hartford Seminary (Conn.). He was awarded a doctoral degree by the Pontificio Istituto di Studi Arabi e d’Islamistica (PISAI) in Rome.

 

Amin Kader Associate Professor of Business Administration, Augsburg College Luther Seminary

Amin Kader teaches in the accounting and international business areas at Augsburg College. He also teaches a course on Islam. He is the current president of the Islamic Institute of Minnesota in Maplewood, Minn. He also served as past president of the Islamic Center of Minnesota in Fridley, Minn. He is the author of several articles on Islamic issues and is a frequent media discussant on Islamic and Middle Eastern topics.

He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Cairo (Egypt), and an M.B.A. from University of Michigan.

Kader has also been visiting professor at the Institute of Management and Marketing at Catholic University in Lublin, Poland.
