Dr. John Haught to be speaker in convocation series

Author of "God After Darwin: A Theology of Evolution"

Oct. 10, 2000

WHO: Dr. John Haught, Landegger Distinguished Professor of Theology, Georgetown University. His area of specialization is systematic theology, with a particular interest in issues pertaining to science, cosmology, ecology and religion. He is the author of "God After Darwin: A Theology of Evolution" among other works.

WHAT: The 2000-01 Augsburg Convocation Series: "Science and the Quest for Cosmic Purpose" and "God after Darwin." After Darwin, can we still make sense of the idea of divine providence? At the beginning of the 21st century, can we arrive at a plausible understanding of God that is both consistent with traditional belief and adequate to the reality of evolutionary science? This talk will discuss these issues and then propose that evolutionary portraits of life may open up fresh ways of thinking about divine providence and cosmic purpose.

WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 19, 7 p.m. "Science and the Quest for Cosmic Purpose," Public Lecture; and Friday, Oct. 20, 11 a.m. "God after Darwin," Convocation.

WHERE: Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center, Augsburg College campus, Minneapolis

WHY: Science and Religion in Dialogue. Where does religion "fit" into the age of computer technology, exploration of the frontiers of genetics, and the scientific search for extraterrestrial life? This is the second in a yearlong, six part series of the Augsburg Convocation Series 2000-2001.
