Emiliano Chagil

Emiliano Chagil was recently named director of the Hispanic/Latino Student Services Program at Augsburg College.

Chagil, who began his duties on March 6, came to Augsburg after serving for six years as the program manager of the Campaign for Human Development for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. He also has extensive experience working as a program coordinator for Hispanic Community Outreach and Refugee Services. Chagil has been active in numerous community activities and has held office or memberships in a variety of community organizations.

Chagil said he was excited about reaching out to high school students interested in attending Augsburg and helping to support current Augsburg students as they pursue their educational goals.

"Academic education is a window to the world, which complements family formation and the development of self," Chagil said.

Chagil received a master's degree in theology from the University of St. Thomas School of Divinity in 1999 and a bachelor's degree in science and letters from the Seminary of Saint Joseph in Guatemala in 1973.

Augsburg's Hispanic/Latino Student Services Program offers students individualized attention in many areas, including academic support, counseling, and advocacy.

Students find assistance in admissions and financial aid procedures, orientation and registration, academic planning, career counseling, housing, internships and employment, and placement referrals.

The program advises the Latino Student Association and supports academic, social, and cultural events, as well as other activities that improve the academic and personal development of Hispanic/Latino students and provide awareness of the unique aspects of Hispanic culture.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Augsburg's Hispanic/Latino Student Services Program will serve as a co-sponsor of Augsburg's International Student Week (April 3-7) and in May will support the Cinco de Mayo celebration.

This year's activities include a performance of South American music from a local group, Carullacta, which will perform on campus Friday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Christensen Center (in case of inclement weather, the performance will move inside).

The Hispanic/Latino Student Services Program is also planning a series of events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in October.
