Augsburg College student Jared Trost wins Goldwater Scholarship

Apr. 08, 1999

Augsburg College junior Jared Trost, a 1996 graduate of Kenyon-Wanamingo (Minn.) High School, was one of 304 undergraduate students nationwide in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering to earn a prestigious Goldwater scholarship for the 1999-2000 academic year.

Goldwater scholarships are one- and two-year scholarships that cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to $7,500. Trost received a two-year scholarship.

The scholarship winners were selected by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundations from more than 1,100 nominees by college and university faculties.

Trost, who is majoring in biology and chemistry, has a 3.93 grade point average (4.0 scale). He is the third Augsburg student in the last four years to be named a Goldwater scholar, and this year he was one of eight students from Minnesota private colleges to receive the award.

Trost plays varsity baseball at Augsburg and has also been involved in campus ministry outreach, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Advent Vespers and is a member of Tri-Beta, a biology honor society.

After graduating from Augsburg following the fall semester in 2000, Trost, the son of Jeff and Jan Trost of Kenyon, Minn., plans to pursue a graduate degree in ecology or environmental science.

The federally endowed Goldwater Foundation, now in its 11th year, has awarded 2,711 scholarships worth approximately $28 million since being established in 1986. The scholarship program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Goldwater scholarships are considered the premier undergraduate awards of their kinds in these fields.
