Dr. James A. Forbes Jr. to speak at Augsburg College on "Spirituality and Racial Diversity"

Named one of 12 "most effective preachers" in English-speaking world by Newsweek Magazine

Dr. James A. Forbes Jr., senior minister at The Riverside Church in New York City, will speak on "The Christian Citizen in a Racially Diverse City" in a free public convocation at Augsburg College's 1999 Christensen Symposium (Oct. 10-11).

Forbes, recognized by Newsweek Magazine in its March 4, 1996 issue as one of the 12 "most effective preachers" in the English-speaking world, will speak at an 11 a.m. convocation on Monday, Oct. 11 in Augsburg's Hoversten Chapel, located in the Foss Center (corner of 22nd and Riverside Avenues South). The public is welcome.

Forbes was installed as the fifth senior minister of The Riverside Church on June 1, 1989. The Riverside Church is an interracial, interdenominational and international church built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1927. The 2,400-member church is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches and the United Church of Christ.

The Christensen Symposium will begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10 with a free public gospel celebration titled "Spirituality and Racial Harmony" that will be held in Hoversten Chapel.

On Oct. 11, Forbes will speak at an ecumenical prayer breakfast in the East Commons of Augsburg's Christensen Center (720 - 22nd Avenue S.) at 7:30 a.m. The cost of breakfast for the public is $8. Call (612) 330-1171 to make breakfast reservations.

Following the convocation, the general public is also welcome to attend a luncheon ($6 cost-reservations required) at 12:15 p.m. that will feature a discussion period with Forbes. The luncheon will be in the East Commons of the Christensen. To make luncheon reservations, call (612) 330-1024.

Street parking is available for free, and there is a pay parking ramp across Riverside Avenue from the Foss Center.
