Augsburg College to name scholarship for Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Andrew

Jan. 25, 1999

Augsburg College will announce at Tuesday's 2 p.m. meeting of the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners that one of Augsburg's future Seward Montessori School scholarships will be named for Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Andrew, who is retiring from the Hennepin County Board on Feb. 2.

The meeting will be held in the County Board Room on the 24th floor of the Hennepin County Government Center, located at 300 S. 6th St. in Minneapolis.

Augsburg is honoring Andrew because his 16-year tenure on the Hennepin County Board has been characterized by an emphasis on service that closely represents the Augsburg motto, "Education for Service," said Glen Skovholt, vice president of government and community affairs at Honeywell, Inc., and a member of the Augsburg board of regents.

"Augsburg College is known locally and nationally for its public and community service, and this is an appropriate way to honor and recognize the service Commissioner Andrew has provided to the people of Hennepin County throughout his tenure on the county board," Skovholt said.

Andrew's efforts have been in keeping with the philosophy of service to community that led to Augsburg creating scholarship opportunities for students from nearby Seward Montessori School to attend Augsburg.

Augsburg's Seward Montessori School scholarship program provides all students in grades 1-8 the opportunity to earn a $1,000 scholarship to be applied to their post-secondary education at Augsburg for each full year they attend Seward Montessori School. A student could receive $8,000 in scholarship money to attend Augsburg.

Augsburg announced this scholarship program on Oct. 27 as part of a vision that promotes and supports lifelong learning for students in Minneapolis Public Schools.

Andrew has served the residents of south Minneapolis and St. Louis Park for the past 16 years as their representative on the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners.

Andrew's long-time commitment and effort on behalf of a vital urban area reflect his deep commitment to the city.

Augsburg is a private college of the liberal arts and sciences and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Nearly 3,000 students are enrolled at the College in undergraduate day college, Weekend College and graduate programs.
