Augsburg College student Erik C.B. Johnson wins Goldwater Scholarship

Apr. 16, 1998

Augsburg College junior Erik C.B. Johnson, a 1995 graduate of Vermillion High School in Vermillion, S.D., was one of 316 undergraduate students nationwide in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering to earn a prestigious Goldwater scholarship for the 1998-99 academic year.

Johnson, who has a 3.98 grade point average, received a one-year scholarship that will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to $7,500.

The scholarship winners were selected by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundations from more than 1,100 nominees by college and university faculties.

Johnson is the second Augsburg student in the last three years to be named a Goldwater scholar, and this year he was one of eight students from Minnesota private colleges to receive the award.

After graduating from Augsburg in May 1999, Johnson, the son of Christopher Johnson and Dr. Susan Johnson of Vermillion, S.D., plans to pursue doctorate (M.D./Ph.D.) degrees.

The federally endowed Goldwater Foundation has awarded 2,407 scholarships worth approximately $25 million since being established in 1986. The scholarship program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Goldwater scholarships are considered the premier undergraduate awards of their kinds in these fields.

Augsburg is a private college of the liberal arts and sciences and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Nearly 3,000 students are enrolled at the College in undergraduate day college, Weekend College and graduate programs.
