Augsburg names Ida Simon, Paul Carlson Vice Presidents

Nov. 07, 1997

Augsburg College President William V. Frame announced today that Ida Simon has been appointed as the College's vice president for advancement and community relations, and that Paul Carlson has been named vice president for finance and administration. Both are expected to begin their duties on Jan. 1.

Naming Simon and Carlson to their posts completes Augsburg's four-person staff of vice presidents under Frame, who began his duties as Augsburg's 10th president on Aug. 1.

Simon is currently the vice president for development at Saint Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Va., a position in which she has served for the past four years.

Carlson is currently the associate vice chancellor for business and finance at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., a position he has held since 1996. He has worked at the University of Nebraska for the past 14 years.

Said Frame of the two new vice presidents: "Ida's vocation has developed to a point that makes Augsburg the perfectly logical next step. As a church-related private baccalaureate institution in a major city, with a critical underwriting task just ahead, we offer her a very attractive opportunity. She offers us a passionate interest in success as well as remarkable experience and accomplishments.

"Paul's experience in a large public institution will be especially useful in his leading our division of Finance and Administration. His interest in net revenue development and providing better service at less cost will take him beyond the control and restraint orientation typical in the position."

Both Simon and Carlson said they looked forward to coming to Augsburg.

"I view the division of Advancement and Community Relations as the foundation securing the future of Augsburg," Simon said. "I am very honored and consider it a special privilege to have the opportunity to guide and empower a special team of people with the 'can-do' spirit inherent in the traditions and history of the Lutheran Church."

Said Carlson: "I am looking forward to a Lutheran school where I can use my God-given talents. I have been active in church and church-related activities as a treasurer and president and have served on Synod councils, and I look forward to being associated with a Lutheran educational institution."

IDA SIMON'S BACKGROUND -- Since Simon has been at Saint Paul's College, she has been responsible for overseeing a capital development campaign that increased its receipts and pledges from $1.51 million in October 1993 to $6.25 million by the end of 1996.

Prior to her position at Saint Paul's College, Simon worked for seven years at The College Fund/UNCF, Inc. in New York. She began as a fundraising and special event marketing consultant there in 1986 and was advanced to national director of marketing in 1987. In April 1991, she was named the company's national director of alumni groups/national organizations.

Ida Simon graduated from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in education. She received her master of education degree in 1972 from the University of Illinois and master of divinity degree in 1987 from Union Theological Seminary in New York.

PAUL CARLSON'S BACKGROUND -- Carlson was named an associate vice chancellor at the University of Nebraska on Nov. 1, 1993. In this position, he has managed eight operational areas of the University that have a combined $24 million annual budget and employ 185 staff members. Carlson has held a number of positions during his 14 years at Nebraska, including a stint as the University's interim vice chancellor from Jan. 1, 1995 until Feb. 1, 1996. Carlson was an accountant for Arthur Andersen & Co. in Minneapolis from 1971 to 1976.

Paul Carlson graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He received his master's of business administration in 1970 from the University of Montana and has completed coursework at the University of Nebraska towards a doctorate in educational administration.
