New Augsburg College president to join first-year students in volunteering at local service organizations

Aug. 28, 1997

Before setting foot in their first college class, more than 300 Augsburg College first-year students will join new Augsburg president William V. Frame in volunteering from 1-5 p.m. on Tuesday at 18 Twin Cities service organizations. Classes begin Wednesday at Augsburg.

Among the scheduled activities is a Back-to-School Supply Carnival from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Brian Coyle Community Center in Minneapolis. At the carnival, Augsburg students will hold 10 different games for elementary, junior and senior high kids, with the prizes for the games being school supplies.

Other projects include: working in the Bethany Lutheran Food Bank; doing yard work for the Cedar Riverside People's Center; general cleaning for senior citizens; rehab of housing for Habitat for Humanity and sorting clothes at the Clothing Connection.

It is the seventh year in a row that Augsburg first-year students will start their college careers by serving others. Augsburg's First Year Experience program is run jointly by the academic and student life divisions of the college and includes, in addition to community service, related seminars and reading for the students.

The group of students, led by student orientation leaders and faculty advisors, will walk or bus to their service destinations from the Augsburg campus.
