Chekhov's Three Sisters Opens Augsburg Theatre Season

Oct. 22, 1997

The Augsburg College Theatre Program opens its 1997/98 season Friday, November 7 with Charles Nolte's adaptation of "The Three Sisters" by Anton Chekhov. The play, one of the best known works by Russia's greatest 19th century dramatist, is set in a country house inhabited by the three title characters, Masha, Olga, and Irina, who long to leave their provincial home for the sophisticated delights of Moscow. During the course of the play, which Chekhov called "a tragicomedy," the characters learn to live in the present rather than dwelling on unrealized hopes for the future.

"The Three Sisters" will be directed by Professor Julie Bolton, who has taught at Augsburg since 1976 and served as Director of the Theatre Arts Program for twelve years. She is the creator of the Augsburg Artist Series. A professional actress, she has performed at the Guthrie Theater and the Cricket Theatre Company, among others. Additionally, Bolton served one year as an artist-in-residence for the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

Performances of "The Three Sisters" will take place November 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15 at 7 pm, and November 9 and 16 at 2 pm. All performances will be at the Tjornhom-Nelson Theatre in the Foss Center on the Augsburg College campus, 22nd and Riverside Avenues in Minneapolis. Tickets are $6, or $4 for Augsburg students, faculty, and staff members. For advance reservations or more information, call the box office at 612/330-1257.
