Apr. 25, 1996

Jim Wallis, editor of Sojourners magazine and leader of the socially active Sojourners Community of Inner-City Washington, D.C., is the featured speaker for the 14th Annual Seminar in Applied Ethics at Augsburg College May 1 and 2.

Wallis will give a lecture Wednesday, May 1, 7:30 p.m., in Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center, on "Prophetic Spirituality and a New Politics." Following the presentation, Wallis will take audience questions.

"Government Policy, Public Morality and Christian Faith" will be Wallis' topic on Thursday, May 2, 9:20 a.m., also in Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center (corner of 22nd Avenue South and Riverside Avenue). Both events are free and open to the public. For more information call 612/330-1180.

Jim Wallis promotes a vision of a spiritually based and value-centered politics that he claims transcends the old polarities of liberal and conservative, left and right. Wallis and friends founded the Sojourners community and magazine in 1975. The monthly Sojourners magazine examines issues of faith, politics and culture. The Washington neighborhood center run by the Sojourners community serves some 1,000 families through food programs and focuses on at-risk youth through after-school, summer and parental support activities.

The Augsburg Seminars in Applied Ethics are made possible by the Batalden Applied Ethics Fund. Previous seminars have addressed issues in sexual harassment, corporate responsibility, the news media, the use of computers, government, education, the judicial system and armed conflict.
