Boyd Koehler Has Research Article Published

A publication of Boyd Koehler's, (Library), and Grace Dyrud's (Psychology) American Psychological Association presentation, Beyond Social Media: Library Instruction for Psychology Seniors, will appear in the APA Division, Society of Teaching Psychology's e-book. This e-book summarizes the presentations at the American Psychology Association's Division of Teaching of Psychology at the national convention held in Denver, August, 2016.

Teaching Across Cultures Workshop - Mon., Nov. 7

All faculty and staff are invited to attend this new workshop next Monday led by Joanne Reeck, Augsburg's Chief Diversity Officer.

The workshop will provide tools for faculty to teach across individuated and integrated cultural frameworks. You will have the opportunity to analyze your own teaching style and discuss how to incorporate tools in your classes that will set students up for success across cultural backgrounds.

Model United Nations and POL 368

Students, don't forget that the priority deadline to apply for next spring's Model UN Delegation is Monday, November 14. Those accepted will enroll in POL 368 in the spring semester and travel to NYC for the national conference on March 18-25, 2017. A lab fee of $500 is required; the college will cover the remainder of the cost.

Prerequisites are POL 160 World Politics OR consent of the instructor. Any undergraduate student, regardless of major or class year, may apply!

Join us to learn about on-campus research opportunities for Summer 2017. URGO provides paid research opportunities for students to work under the guidance of a faculty mentor. No previous research experience is required; URGO summer mentoring and programming is designed to support students throughout the research process and facilitate professional development. Student researchers get to know each other well over the summer through regular meetings and are also given the opportunity to explore more of the city through social events.

At the info sessions you will hear about the various summer research options offered here on campus, learn about the application process, and hear from past summer researchers about their experiences.

There are programs designed for students in the sciences and social sciences and they often include a research stipend and housing. Such programs are a great way to enhance your education, meet new people, and explore a new city!

Attend an URGO Off-Campus Research Info Session and discuss how to find opportunities and how to build your strongest application. Hear stories and advice from students who have participated in off-campus research in past summers. In previous years, students have conducted research at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, The University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, The University of Minnesota, and many more!

Collection for DAPL Protesters

Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (AISA) and American Indian Student Services are collecting donated items to take to DAPL protesters at the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires) Camp in Cannonball, ND as they prepare for winter months. Items we are collecting are:
--Blankets, winter sleeping bags, sleeping mats, cots
--Insulated boots and other cold weather clothing
--Insulated gloves, work gloves

Items can be brought to Oyate' Commons located at in the lower level of Christensen Center Room 2.

People are also invited to donate directly to the camp. More information can be found at: http://www.ocetisakowincamp.org/ under 'donate'.

We are also selling 'STOP DAPL' t-shirts as a fundraiser. This funding will be used to go to the camp and/or purchase items in need there. Please watch for us tabling in the Christensen Center or stop by Oyate' Commons to purchase one.

Tues., Nov. 8 is Election Day! Celebration your civic participation and use #AuggiesVote.

Augsburg students who live on campus and are eligible to vote can do same day registration and vote on campus - Augsburg sent the list of resident students to the City of Minneapolis Elections Board.

Augsburg is the district precinct's voting place - Christensen Center, Marshall Room.

The Engman Writing Prize

The John Engman Writing Prize, a literary competition sponsored by Murphy Square and the Augsburg English Department, is awarded each year to promising writers. This year's submission deadline is Sunday, December 18. Judges of the competition will select winners in each of the categories of fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction.

To enter, writers must submit the following:

Short Fiction - One complete short story of not more than 15 pages.
Creative Non-fiction - One complete piece not longer than 15 pages.
Poetry - At least three poems.

All writers must be enrolled at Augsburg College and may enter each of the categories as often as they wish, but they may only win in one. Names of writers must not be on the works submitted.

The prize was named in honor of poet and Augsburg alumnus John Engman who died in 1996. Judges for the contest are English Department faculty members. The judges reserve the right to withhold awards if entries in specific categories are not of winning quality; they may also increase the number of awards in a category that has attracted entries of obvious merit. Winners will be notified in January.

Be a Part of Advent Vespers Processional Party

The 37th Annual Advent Vespers is approaching rapidly! Ten to twelve thousand people come to the 'cathedral-like' Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis for Augsburg's Advent Vespers. Hundreds of Augsburg singers, instrumentalists and liturgical participants will lead these five services. Be a part of vespers by carrying a candle, torch banner, or bells in the gospel processional! This is a great way to settle into Advent and spend time with other Auggies.

The services are on Friday, 12/2, at 5pm & 8pm, and on Saturday, 12/3, at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm. Bus transportation between Augsburg campus and Central Lutheran is provided, as well as meals and snacks.

Heritage Day - TODAY

AUGSBURG STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF, YOU'RE INVITED TO HERITAGE DAY on Thursday, November 3!

As Augsburg approaches its 150th Anniversary (in 2019), we continue to explore how our Lutheran heritage informs our callings.

On November 3, join us in celebrating Heritage Day 2016 through creative engagement with contemporary issues of race and faith. Artists Joe Davis and Agape will lead us through creative dialogue through music, storytelling, and poetry.

AGAPE* (Dave Scherer) has inspired hundreds of thousands of people from Brooklyn to Bosnia with his relational ministry "Hip Hop Outreach." Combining rapping, dancing, storytelling and his fluency in Spanish, AGAPE* connects with his listeners in a way that they really "get it". He has recorded 10 albums and recently published a book entitled "Agap-ology". His ministry was also featured in a ABC documentary about people tackling food insecurity in America. These days you can find him at Luther Seminary where he works part-time as the Christian Public Leader coordinator. He is also a Qualified Administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory.

Joe Davis is a multi-media spoken word poet, teaching artist, and community organizer based in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Engaging wildly diverse audiences--from hundreds of interfaith and intergenerational marchers at the Selma to MN 50th Anniversary March to over 35,000 youth at the Ford Field Stadium in Detroit, Michigan--Joe Davis has a gift for bringing people together around honest poems, stories, and songs. One of six recipients of the 2015 Intermedia Verve Spoken Word Artist Grant, he founded a music collective, The Poetic Diaspora, while developing a classroom curriculum and producing a documentary film exploring the history of the Minneapolis-St.Paul spoken word scene. As a student and educator, he has served as teaching artist at dozens of high schools and universities and is currently the Artist-in-Residence at Luther Seminary, pursuing a masters in Theology of the Arts.

More about our speaker: Leif Anderson
As vice president and chief strategy officer, Leif Anderson leads institutional planning and effectiveness at Augsburg, working to realize the college's vision through implementation of the Augsburg2019 strategic plan. Leif's role includes special support for the president and the staffing of key committees including the University Council, the President's Leadership Team, and the Regents Committee of the Board.

Prior to his appointment as chief strategy officer in 2016, Leif served for 20 years in leadership roles within Augsburg's information technology organization. He became Augsburg's first chief information officer in 2002 and was promoted to vice president in 2008. Alongside his leadership in higher education, Leif is a dedicated volunteer in the performing arts, having served for 13 years as a founding board member of TU Dance, a renowned contemporary dance organization in St. Paul. He holds a B.A. in German from the University of Minnesota, and a Master's in Public Affairs from the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School.
