Beginning to Build Upward on the Hagfors Center

As the ground-level slab and basement walls are nearing completion, construction crews begin work on columns and the first-story ceiling/second-story floor. Underground Parking Closures

The Department of Public Safety and Facilities Management will be closing the Oren Gateway and Luther Hall Underground Parking areas. This closure will allow for the underground parking areas to be cleaned and striped in preparation for the upcoming academic year.

Both underground parking areas will be closed starting Thursday, July 21 at 6 a.m. until Saturday, July 23 at 6 a.m. Any vehicles that are not moved from the underground parking areas will be relocated to an Augsburg College surface lot.

Current permit holders may park in any Augsburg College surface lot with their underground permit on the days of closure. We apologize for any inconvenience that this closure may cause the Augsburg College Community.

Use the WL on Mondays and Thursdays This Summer

Writing Lab tutors can help all Augsburg students, even in the summer. Visit them on the street level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. Online help is also available with permission. Summer hours are Mondays and Thursdays from 4:30-7 p.m. through the end of the second summer session, Thursday, August 18.

Eric Canny to Pursue New Leadership Opportunity

Dear faculty and staff colleagues,

Please join me in congratulating Eric Canny, who will be leaving Augsburg in late summer for an exciting new leadership position as vice president for global programs in an organization that provides a wide range of international education experiences for students from the United States and Canada. His last official day at Augsburg will be September 1.

During his time at Augsburg College, Eric brought energetic and visionary leadership and a fresh perspective to our global education and study away programs. In close partnership with CGEE staff in our various locations, he led the integration of international programs and activities into one new Center for Global Education and Experience, effectively retaining--while signaling a shift in--CGE's distinctive identity and brand. He not only led work to revise and refresh policies, decision-making processes, and organizational structures, he also created new growth opportunities for international program staff. In challenging fiscal times, he managed resources efficiently and effectively to ensure that we met or exceeded expected margins. Finally, Eric has been an important contributor to the Academic Affairs Leadership Team (AALT), strengthening connections and conversations among and between the College's four centers of commitment, working to implement structures for program review to assess the effectiveness of the centers, working collaboratively with the academic deans and staff leaders, and strengthening curricular and co-curricular assessments that map to the institutional student learning outcomes approved by the faculty. We've been lucky to have him at Augsburg College: in a very short time, he has made major contributions. On a more personal note, I am grateful for the chance to have worked with him now at two different institutions. At each, I have seen a rare capacity to facilitate organizational change in a relatively short period of time; at both institutions, he has had a transformative impact.

This has not been an easy decision for Eric to reach, given the people, the mission, and the incredible work we do. In his words, "Augsburg offers truly life changing international opportunities to students, which are so critical to the world in which we live."

A transition plan will be developed and shared soon. Over the next several weeks, I will consult with members of my leadership team, CGEE staff, and faculty as we chart a path forward and seek new leadership for our distinctive global education programs. In late August, there will be an opportunity for members of the campus community to celebrate Eric's new vocational journey and bid him farewell.

MFA Summer Residency - Readings and Screenings

The MFA in Creative Writing 2016 Summer Residency will be held Thursday, July 21 through Sunday, July 31. Please join us in welcoming our group of very talented students and acclaimed writers to campus for this festival of craft talks, workshops, evening readings and more.

This summer's visiting writers include Jacob M. Appel, winner of the Howling Bird Press Fiction Book Award; travel, science and nature writer Greg Breining; poet Sean Hill; and screenwriter and producer Michael Starrbury. In addition, nine graduating MFA students will be giving public readings of their works - Jennifer Holznagel, Mary Lewis, Ginny Contreras Sawyer, Katherine L Berger, Kevin Matuseski, Kirk Boettcher, Michelle Doege, Jodi Napiorkowski and Jeremy Bandow. We invite you to join us for these evening readings/screenings and receptions, at which our visiting writers will be available to sign their works. All events are free and the public is invited.
