Lot F Curb Closure for Crane

Organics and Recycling Information

Please stop by the first floor Christensen Lobby on Friday, April 22, Earth Day, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. to pick up information on recycling and composting. In conjunction with the grant that Augsburg College received through Hennepin County, we will be increasing our recycling and composting efforts campuswide to include new collection containers inside the facility and on the campus grounds, all new signage in order to increase awareness and education, and adding to our recycling efforts by placing specialty recycling containers across campus in order to collect used batteries, plastic bags,and small electronics, to name a few.

Franklin Avenue Bridge Closure May 8

DPS would like to share information regarding the closure of the Franklin Avenue Bridge. Please keep this closure in mind when planning alternative routes to campus.

At 8 p.m. on May 8, the Franklin Avenue Bridge (County Road 5) will completely close to all traffic (motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians). The closure is expected to remain in place until Labor Day weekend.

In the next day or so, we will be sending out notifications to all of the public via press release, website update, and GovDelivery email. These upcoming communications will go into more detail on the closure and detours.

Get Status Updates On Hagfors Center Construction

Interested in Grad School? Sign Up for GRE Prep

Want to Go to Grad School? You May Need the GRE.

The GRE is a standardized test that is required for many graduate school applications. Augsburg College offers an eight week GRE prep course each summer for students, alumni, and staff at a cost well below those found at private test centers. This course is taught by Augsburg faculty and staff and walks students through each section of the general test. Throughout the course students complete sample test questions and receive in-depth feedback and instruction. The registration fee also includes a six-month subscription to the online GRE study tool, Magoosh.

Important Information about the Writing Lab

First, thanks to the wonderful tutors, it is likely the WL will have conducted around 2,000 tutoring sessions this academic year and summer. That is testament to the good work these students do!
The Lab will operate on its regular schedule through next Wednesday evening's shift. So, remaining sessions this semester are Friday, 4:30 - 7; Sunday, 5 - 8; Monday: 11:10 - 1:40 and 6:30 - 9:30; Tuesday: 12:30 - 3; 3:30 - 6; and 7:30 - 10; and Wednesday 3:30 - 6:00 and 6:30 - 9.

Starting on May 9, hours will be 4:30-7 on Mondays and Thursdays. These hours will be constant through the second summer session, ending on August 19 (with a break over the July 4 holiday, in accordance with the class schedule.)

If you are completing a summer internship that you would like to count for your Augsburg Experience, don't forget to register for a non-credit internship (AUG EX3) before starting your experience this summer.

To get started, please attend one of the following Internship Registration/Orientation Session in the Strommen Center (Christensen Center, Suite 100):

Tuesday, April 26 at 10:30am (finals week)
Monday, May 2 at 12:00pm

Who should attend?
- Students who have an internship lined up for the summer that is related to their major and/or career goals
- Students who want the internship to count for their Augsburg Experience graduation requirement

Career Quick Stop Is Winding Down

Students! There are two more weeks left of Career Quick Stop this semester. Stop by Suite 100 of the Christensen Center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 2:30-4:00 p.m. These walk-in hours are meant for quick career questions and short resume reviews. Appointments will be limited to 15 minutes and students will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Quick Stop will resume in the fall!

The Strommen Career and Internship Center will be open all summer for one-on-one appointments. Career coaches can assist you with career exploration, resume writing, interviewing, and more! Call 612-330-1148 to schedule an appointment.

Flag Bearers Needed - $$$

Commencement 2016 is right around the corner, and we're looking for current students that would be able to assist as a flag bearer for each ceremony. This year's ceremonies are both on Saturday, April 30:

Day Undergraduate Ceremony Begins at 10:00am
Flag Bearers Needed from 9:15am-10:15am (Total Needed = 25)

AU/Graduate Program Ceremony Begins at 4:00pm
Flag Bearers Needed from 3:15pm-4:15pm (Total Needed =17)

Each student that carries a flag will receive $20 cash/ceremony.

*Take a shorter shower! Save some water.
*Reduce paper mail by receiving online statements. Contact your banks, utility companies, investment firms, insurance companies, etc. and request online communications.

Get Paid To Do An Internship - Apply Today

Wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get paid to do an internship?

You may be able to do just that because of a grant awarded to Augsburg College. The Career Ready Internship grant from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation provides funds to colleges and universities so that they can partner with businesses and nonprofits to develop new paid internships, and convert existing unpaid internships into paid opportunities. This program serves juniors and seniors who receive financial aid, improving their odds of graduating and preparing them to enter the workforce with real-world experience in their fields of study.

To be eligible:

* Students must be in good academic standing (2.0+ GPA)
* Students must be a college junior or senior (60 credits completed) at the time of the internship
* Students must be eligible for financial aid (work study)
* The internship must be related to your major or career aspirations
* Accepting applications NOW for Fall 2016 and Spring 2017.

Act now! Priority consideration is given to students who complete the short Augsburg application, so we recommend you complete it soon.

"Theater: A Sacred Passage" This Weekend Only

Three Augsburg theater alums (Stephanie Lein Walseth, Quinci Bachman, and Jorge Rodriguez) & Professor Emerita Martha Johnson are part of the Full Circle Theater Company's return engagement of “Theater: A Sacred Passage” for three performances only at Dreamland Arts in St. Paul this coming weekend. Stephanie and Martha are two writers of this original performance piece, devised by the five core artists of Full Circle from their personal journeys into theater. This production was selected as one of the “Best of the Week” in Sunday's Star Tribune.

Other writers are James Williams, Rick Shiomi, and Lara Trujillo. Their stories embody the challenges and transformational experiences they have had in becoming theater artists and how their lives and work reflect the huge changes in our theater community over the past two decades.

The piece incorporates acting, storytelling, choreography and music. Quinci Bachman is production coordinator, stage manager, and sound designer. Jorge Rodriguez is set and technical director and lighting designer. Martha Johnson is dramaturge and assistant director. MN Undergraduate Psychology Conference TOMORROW

Please join us! The Psychology Department is hosting the 51st annual Minnesota Undergraduate Psychology Conference (MUPC) on Saturday, April 23rd from 8:00am - 3:30pm. Approximately 330 psychology majors and 75 faculty members from Minnesota and surrounding states will be in attendance. The conference includes a series of student research paper and poster sessions, a psychology graduate school and job fair from 9:00am - 1:00pm in OGC100, and a keynote address from distinguished eyewitness memory researcher, Dr. Gary Wells, in the Chapel from 10:45am - 12:00pm. Free Music, Henna, and Fun On The Patio

The Cedar Cultural Center is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the Community Plaza, a newly renovated neighborhood gathering spot right next to The Cedar on Saturday, April 23 from 5-7pm.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Comm Studies Students Present at UST Conference

Congratulations to eleven COM 352 (Persuasion) students who are presenting their research today at the University of St. Thomas Undergraduate Research Conference in Communication Studies. Joining students from 17 other schools at the conference are these Auggies: Shelby Brion, Audrey Campbell, Sammy Coy, Katie Davidson, Britt Fabrello, Patrick Hager, Rachel Jackson, Sam Kazeminy, Emily Keeler, Natalie Shaw, and Aaron Wylie.

Auggies Named National Science Foundation Fellows

Fikre Beyene '16, Physics and Allison Zank '14, Chemistry have been named National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows for 2016-2017. Fikre and Allison will receive a $34,000 annual stipend and $12,000 cost-of-education allowance to assist them in achieving a research-based master's or doctoral degree. This year, there were close to 17,000 applicants for the awards, and only 2,000 selected Fellows. Sadie Tetrick '16, Physics & Mathematics, was named Honorable Mention. An NSF GRFP indicates to graduate schools that these students are top undergraduate scientists in the nation. Congratulations to these students and the departments who mentored them.

Below is a small snapshot of each of these students' amazing science accomplishments.

Fikre Beyene has conducted Space Physics research with Dr. Engebretson and Dr. Murr since the summer after his freshman year. Over his four years here, he has been named a Sundquist Scholar, McNair Scholar, AugSTEM Scholar, Calc Workshop Teaching Assistant, Rossing Physics Scholar, and Goldwater Scholar. He will be entering the Astro Physics PhD program at UCLA this fall.

Allison Zank conducted summer research on biofilms with Dr. Bankers-Fulbright as well as at the University of Minnesota's Dental School. She has also spent time conducting research in industry. Over her time here, she was named an URGO Scholar, McNair Scholar, AugSTEM Scholar, and Goldwater Scholar. She plans to pursue a Master's degree in Clinical Microbiology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse this fall.

Sadie Tetrick began her space physics research here on campus with Dr. Murr and Dr. Engebretson and went on to conduct summer research at Dartmouth University and the University of Minnesota. During her time here, Sadie has been a Sundquist Scholar, President of Society of Physics Students, Co-founder of Women in Physics, and a member of Pi Mu Epsilon. Sadie will be joining the PhD program in Physics at the University of Iowa this fall.

Cameron Olson '17 Named Goldwater Scholar

Augsburg Physics major, Cameron Olson '17, was awarded a $7,500 Goldwater Scholarship, the premier STEM award for undergraduates. Each college in the country is able to nominate four undergraduate STEM students, and this year, 252 awardees were chosen from 1,150 applicants nationwide. Cameron has conducted space physics research here on campus with Dr. Engebretson and will do a second summer of research this year at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab under the mentorship of Augsburg physics alumnus, Dr. Brian Anderson '82.

Kathryn Swanson Presents Scholarship

Kathryn Swanson, professor of English, was an invited speaker and facilitator for the University of St. Thomas Physician Leadership College. This program is part of the UST Executive Education for Physician Leadership program. Swanson also presented a paper on the detective fiction of Lisa Scottoline and Karin Slaughter at the recent Popular Culture/American Culture annual conference in Seattle.
