Schedule for Assessment Day on February 24, 2015

Please note that the daytime course schedule on the Minneapolis campus will be altered on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 to accommodate Assessment Day Activities. Many departments have planned assessment activities with their majors during the Assessment Period. Students should be aware that class times may have moved but class sessions still will be held. Seniors who will not be participating in departmental assessment activities are encouraged to volunteer to complete the Collegiate Learning Assessment.

The purpose of Assessment Day is to allow time for faculty to engage students in activities that will help us to study student learning at Augsburg College and determine ways to improve student learning.

Faculty and staff are invited to attend Assessment workshops between 11:00 am and 12:30 pm in Kennedy 303 and 305. The staff workshop will focus on co-curricular assessment and the faculty workshop on shared expectations for writing and critical thinking embedded skills. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP by Monday, February 23 to Amy Gort to allow planning for meals.

Present Your Student Research at Zyzzogeton

Calling all student researchers: participate in Augsburg's annual Zyzzogeton poster fair on April 10th from 2-4 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Atrium! This event, sponsored by URGO, McNair, and STEM Programs, is a chance to share the progress of your research with faculty, fellow students, family, and the community. Last year, over 75 students participated in Zyzzogeton.

ABSTRACTS ARE DUE MARCH 9 at the time of registration. To register, go to URGO's website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo) and click on the orange box on the right hand side of the page.
*You do not have to have done research with URGO to participate.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Spring 2015

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Spring 2015 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2016.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Apply to be a Youth Theology Institute Mentor

Attention current students -

We are looking for FIVE current students to serve as mentors for this summer's Youth Theology Institute (ACYTI). http://www.augsburg.edu/ccv/acyti/

If you enjoy engaging in thoughtful faith conversations, mentoring high school youth, and working in a team setting - please take a look at the "ACYTI Mentor" posting on the Human Resources website and apply soon. The position is listed on the Human Resources employment listings under student positions.

Mentors should be available for some training in April and the entire week of June 13-19. Note: this is a paid internship.

The Augsburg College Youth Theology Institute is a collaborative effort by the Christensen Center for Vocation, Campus Ministry, and the Religion Department.

Help Auggies Attend Food Waste & Hunger Summit

From Feb. 20-27, Campus Kitchen students are competing against their peers in a nationwide fundraiser called "Raise The Dough." In addition to raising funds, prizes are available for the schools that raise the most money and that engage the highest number of donors.

Our Goal: Raise $1,200 to travel 1,200 miles to attend the Food Waste & Hunger Summit!

Why? Hear it from the Auggies themselves:

Nabo is open from 7:30am-7:00pm. The Special of the Day is a Roast Beef and Cheddar Wrap with Chips.

Einteins is open from 7:30am-8:00pm with the Late Night Menu starting at 7:00pm.

The Commons is open from 7:30am-7:00pm. Market Place is serving Turkey Chili Pie with Cornmeal Crust, Caramelized Cumin Roasted Carrots, Cannellini Beans with Pancetta & Rosemary, and Loaded Baked Potatoes. Vege is serving Roasted Herbed Baby Red Potatoes, Ginger Scented Tofu, Zucchini with Cilantro Sauce, and Sesame Carrots.

On March 26th we will be having an Iron Chef Competition in The Commons. Teams will be of two people, come up with your best recipe to compete against the Chef! Sign up information will be coming soon.

Attention sophomores -- The application to be a Sabo Scholar during 2015-2016 is now available. The Sabo Scholars are a small group of juniors and seniors who have interest in and a commitment to engagement in the political process, public policy, and careers in public service.

Applications are now being accepted for Scholastic Connections for 2015-16. Successful applicants for 5 available positions will receive a $5,000 scholarship and be paired with an alum of color who will serve as the student's mentor.

Abramson Awarded Auggie Pride for January

Congratulations to our January Auggie Pride Award Winner, Margo Abramson. Abramson serves as Advancement Services Assistant in the Institutional Advancement division. Here is an excerpt from one of the nominations:

"I would like to nominate Margo Abramson for an Auggie Pride Award. In the month of December 2014, Margo led the effort to process more than 4,000 transactions for Institutional Advancement. This represents a 60 percent increase over last year's total. This is just one statistic that illustrates the work Margo does. This is an enormous accomplishment in our world."

AASA Brings You Pan-Asian Week

Hello all! Augsburg's Asian Student Association (AASA) is cordially inviting you to our first ever Pan Asian Week! The Pan Asian Week will occur February 23-27, 2015. The purpose of the Pan Asian Week is to educate and bring awareness of the rich cultures and identities within the Pan-Asian community. Our events are to acknowledge and celebrate Asian identity and history through education and empowerment.
The events are as follows:

- Grab a passport and travel through the regions of Asia to engage yourself and learn about the various Asian cultures and communities within the vast land. Receive passport stamps to earn a bag of Asian sweetness (candies)! How sweet is that?!

Anderson Hall: Center for Wellness and Counselling

- THE GRAND FINALE. In place of AASA's Lunar New Year, the Asian Celebration Show will be filled with entertainment along with learning. Come watch as Asian dance teams rock the house and singers blows us all away. Of course as AASA traditions, a Fashion Show celebrating Asian identity will be included as well! Also this year, we are really going big by adding an Asian style party after the show. We'll teach you the commonly known Southeast Asian dance, the Xao Lao, so you can rock the dance floor with us all night! It's not recommended, but we highly encourage you to dress nice (casual-formal) for the evening.

With the increasing numbers of Asian immigrants, this week's worth of programming would be a really great way for Augsburg students, staff, and faculty to educate themselves to be culturally competent, critical thinkers, and thoughtful stewards. Feedback Session: Boyte Speech on Student Success

Please join the Sabo Center on Tuesday, March 3, 3:30-4:30 in the Marshall Room for a listening and feedback session with Harry Boyte, Senior Scholar of the Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship. Later in March Harry will be delivering the concluding address to the Gates Foundation SXSW EDU 2015 conference, "Getting to Graduation: Re-designing Higher Ed for Student Success" in Austin, Texas.

This feedback session will feature a draft of Boyte's speech, which draws on Augsburg experiences and innovations, as well as the civic agency/public work/democratic society framework reflected in the new book collection he edited, Democracy's Education: Public Work, Citizenship, and the Future of Colleges and Universities (Vanderbilt University Press). This talk is an important opportunity to showcase some of the work of Augsburg and our colleagues in "educating for democracy" throughout higher education, and is open to anyone who would like to attend.

#PeaceItForward: International Video Needs You

Join the #PeaceItForward campaign to tell the world how you make a difference to build peace and to become part of an international video that will be used to raise awareness and grow involvement in peacemaking.

To become part of the campaign, simply stop by Oren Gateway Center from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, to have your photo taken.

Be ready to answer the question of how you build peace and how you make a difference. Maybe you serve meals to the hungry, mentor children or serve on a nonprofit community board. Perhaps you work as part of a restorative justice program, are in a Rotary group that conducts projects across the globe, or help out an elderly neighbor. Peace building takes on many forms, small and large, and we want to capture what you do that makes a difference in your community, your state, our world.

A photographer will take a professional-quality, digital photo and a photo with your cell phone that you can post to social media. The photos will be used as part of a video that will be shown to an international audience at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum being held in Minneapolis from March 6-8. It's your chance to tell the world why peace matters.

Daily Chapel: "Of Horses, Runners, Ballplayers…"

Join us for worship today at 10:40 a.m.: Pastor Charlie Ruud preaching, Normandale Lutheran Church, "Of Horses and Runners, Ballplayers, Students, Professors...and Hope in God." Pr. Ruud has been at Normandale Lutheran pastor in Edina since October, 2013. In his call, he seeks to nurture faith in Jesus and help people connect it to the nitty-gritty of daily life in community. He has formerly played professional baseball for the Saint Paul Saints and enjoys any and all sport while also having a soft spot in his heart for music and fishing.

Generosity Distinguishes Alumna Schwarzkopf '59

Like many Augsburg students, Inez (Olson) Schwarzkopf '59 counted on paychecks to help meet college expenses. She ran the switchboard at St. Barnabas Hospital and operated the freight elevator at Deaconess Hospital, taking the dirty linens down to the basement, and the morticians' gurneys up to the morgue. The job at Messenger Press Bookstore on 22nd and Riverside was the one that really paid off, though. That's where she met Lyall Schwarzkopf, a veteran whose widowed mother owned and operated the hardware store next door. "The best thing I got out of that was my husband," laughs Inez. She and Lyall have been married for 56 years, and made a gift to Augsburg every year since Inez graduated.

It was Lyall who suggested they make a bigger commitment to the Center for Science, Business, and Religion (CSBR). "I was a consistent kind of giver to the annual fund as well as capital drives" explains Inez. But when her non-alumnus husband said, "I think we have to do something [for the CSBR]," Inez listened. "He appreciates the value of the College as a business anchor for that part of Minneapolis," says Inez of Lyall, who is a former Minneapolis city clerk and city coordinator, and secretary of the Minneapolis Charter Commission.

Inez's father, Iver Olson '35, was an ordained pastor and professor at Augsburg Seminary and Augsburg College, where he taught religion and Scandinavian language, literature, and culture for twenty years. He'd regale Inez and her three siblings with Norwegian folk tales, as well as tales of Augsburg, all the while moving smoothly between Norwegian and English.

Serving Augsburg

Inez served on the Augsburg Board of Regents from 1982-1990 and 1992-1998, and received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1991. She was a key player in planning and establishing the Bernhard Christensen Endowed Chair, currently held by Marty Stortz. In 1983, Inez and her siblings established the Iver and Myrtle Olson Scandinavian Scholarship in honor of her parents' 50th wedding anniversary. More recently, Inez and Lyall established a scholarship for English students, with preference for writers.

The couple's generosity to Augsburg is an expression of loyalty and faith, as well as practicality. "It's a matter of how we use God's money," says Inez, who remembers her father's words of wisdom shortly after she and Lyall were married. He said, "You decide at the very beginning what you're going to give away, and you give it away. If you follow that pattern, you'll find that money doesn't have a hold over you." When the time came, Inez told their four children, "Regardless of what college you attend, start giving right after graduation. If all you have is five dollars, you give it to the school so you establish the pattern in your life."
