Parking Appeal Committee Members Needed

As the new school year is underway it is time again to set up the parking appeal committee for the year. This committee will meet once a month to review appeals and make decisions on how the appeal will be handled. The committee will consist of 2 faculty members, 2 staff members, 2 students, and I will chair the committee as the Assistant Director of Public Safety. If selected to this position you will be expected to be unbiased in regards to all aspects of the appeal process. As a committee member your name will remain confidential to assure any outside influences will be minimized. Volunteer as a Debate Judge Saturday

Minnesota Urban Debate League needs High School Novice and Middle School Debate judges! This weekend and many to follow, we need your help judging debates and supporting Twin Cities students. Judges watch tournaments, decide the winners, and give feedback to students to help them improve.

This Sat, Oct. 4th we have our first tournament at Washington Tech Magnet School. We need novice judges to help us out. Morning (8 a.m. - 12 p.m.) and afternoon shifts (12:30 - 5:00 p.m.) are available. We provide all the training needed and have a training session at the tournament from 8:15 - 8:40am.

We can also PAY college students for their time.

High School tournaments are on weekends, with shifts in the morning and afternoon. The first Middle School Tournament is Tuesday, Nov. 18 - Thursday, Nov. 20.

Involvement with debate correlates with an increase of reading proficiency of students by as many as three grade levels, as well as boosting self-esteem, and improving analytical and critical-thinking skills of students. We support hundreds of youth from all over the Twin Cities, with a focus on involvement of students of color and other under-served groups. We need your support to reach even more students.

Center for Teaching and Learning Reading Circle

"The Roundhouse" by Louise Erdrich
Facilitators: Bob Cowgill (English) & Elise Marubbio (American Indian Studies)
Schedule: 12:20-1:30 Wednesdays, Oct. 22 and November 19
Riverside Room, Christensen Center

Set in 1988 on a North Dakota reservation, the 14th novel from Pulitzer finalist Louise Erdrich is the compelling story of a 13-year-old boy thrust into manhood after his mother is the victim of a brutal crime. The Star Tribune praises the book as "an artfully balanced mystery, thriller and coming-of-age story… [a] gripping tale of the effects of violence on a family." This novel is the Many Voices Project common text used in English 111 this school year. The Reading Circle will examine Erdrich's exploration of the lives of Native Americans and themes of violence, family, sovereignty and loss, and discuss how one facilitates discussion of these sometime difficult topics skillfully and with cultural sensitivity.

Faculty and staff may sign up for the Reading Circle and pick up a book in the Department of Nursing SC 116. Please read to p. 148 for the first session. Participants are also invited to have lunch in the cafeteria courtesy of the Batalden Endowment.

Congrats to September Auggie Pride Award Winners

Congratulations to September Auggie Pride Award Winners: Jeff Swenson '79 and Ana Eliason!

Jeff Swenson '79 has been a part of the Augsburg College community since 1975 and currently serves as Athletic Director. Ana Eliason joined Augsburg in 2011 and serves as the Career and Internship Specialist in the Strommen Center.

Here's what Jeff and Ana's colleagues who nominated them had to say:

"Jeff worked tirelessly this summer to raise funds for the new scoreboard to recognize Edor Nelson '38 and put on a major 100th birthday event for Edor in August. He has also been instrumental in securing fellowships for the athletic department, which has led to the back-to-back largest recruiting classes in the history of the Augsburg athletic department."

"Since coming to Augsburg three years ago, Ana has spent hours reviewing the internship process and working with faculty and various departments to see that the process is smooth and easy to follow. Her care, dedication, and commitment to serving students, faculty, and off-campus partners is incredible and it is so often highlighted in her work with internships at Augsburg. Ana plays a big role in designing those "wow" moments when our site supervisors also have a great experience hiring an Auggie."

Jeff and Ana will each receive a $25 gift card and an Auggie "swag bag" to show off their Auggie pride!

October is Veterans' Voices Month

You are invited to join the MFA Faculty as we recognize October as Veterans' Voices Month

During October each of the MFA mentors and their students will be reading and discussing work that illuminates the experiences of those who have served in the armed forces. The project bridges the disconnect between veterans and their civilian counterparts by participating in the initiative passed by the Minnesota State Legislature:

"The month of October is designated as Veterans' Voices Month in recognition of the state's desire to honor, recognize, and celebrate the contributions of veterans. Schools, organizations, and communities in the state are encouraged to hold events and programs that honor veterans and educate students and citizens about the unique culture of the military by sharing and studying veterans' experiences through stories, essays, poetry, and art from the men and women who have served in the armed forces."
(Minnesota State Legislature, 2014)

The legislative initiative was lead by Jay Moad, Former Air Force C-130 pilot with over a hundred combat sorties, Assistant Professor of English at the US Air Force Academy, a fiction editor for the journal War, Literature and the Arts, an Augsburg MFA student seeking a multi-genre degree (fiction, playwriting, and poetry), and a Delta Airline pilot. The Augsburg Community is invited to include in classes and meetings a reflection on "...an essay, story, poetry, OpEd piece... whatever works for your area of study that can help students get a glimpse into this different world and all the repercussions of war across society." Nabo is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Special of the Day is Cajun Chicken Pasta.

Einsteins is open from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., with the late night menu starting at 7:00 p.m.

The Commons is open from 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Market Place is serving fish & chips, roasted asparagus with lemon dill, fried brown rice with soy and veggies and broccoli with walnuts & Parmesan. Vege is serving Mexican corn, cauliflower gratin, potato Lyonnais and butternut rice.

The Commons is having Pretzels & Cheese at dinner on Friday!

Fall Blood Drive Wednesday 10/8

Many of you have already signed up to donate blood (thank you so much!) on Wednesday 10/8 when the Memorial Blood Center will be on campus. There are a limited few time slots still available. Campus Cupboard Food Shelf Now Open to Students

The Campus Cupboard food shelf is now open the following times:

Tuesdays 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Wednesdays 2:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Fridays 12:30 - 2 p.m. (starting on the 10th until 4 p.m.)

The food shelf is open to any Augsburg student to use.

The Augsburg College food shelf, Campus Cupboard, provides free food to students throughout the academic year. Campus Cupboard is located in Hoversten Chapel of Foss Center by the back stairwell to the balcony. If you are an Augsburg student who would like to use the food shelf, stop by during open hours. Students may pick out five food items each visit. An Augsburg student ID is required. (Names will not be recorded, only ID numbers.)

If you would like to donate to the food shelf: Donations of non-perishable food items are accepted in green collection bins at the Welcome Desk and Einstein's (in Christensen), the Campus Ministry/Theater Office (in Foss), and the Urn/Mort and Anderson dorm lobbies.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Materials Now Online For Next Focused Conversation

Background materials for the first Focused Conversation, "The Enrollment Village: Building campuswide engagement around matriculating first-time students," are now available on the "All Hands 2014-2015" page.

The online materials include a set of slides that will be shared during the Focused Conversation as well as a report from Lipman Hearne on how prospective students approach the college decision process. The Lipman Hearne report is additional background information for those who are interested; it is not required reading for participation in the Focused Conversation.

The session will be led by William Mullen, vice president for Enrollment Management and will be held twice. You are invited to attend whichever session fits your schedule:

Gabriela Hamerlinck is currently a doctoral candidate in biology at the University of Iowa. She is an alumna of the biology and mathematics departments, as well as the McNair Scholars and North Star STEM programs. In addition to Gaby's academic successes at Augsburg, she was a two-sport student-athlete, participating in both soccer and track.

'79 Alums Give $25,000 for AWE-Inspired Space

Growing up in Papua New Guinea as the daughter of missionaries, Mary Croft '79 learned a thing or two about living a simple life.

"Our living conditions were fairly primitive or perhaps rustic," she says, fondly recalling her first home, which had a thatched roof and woven bamboo floors. "I think our parents did all they could to make us feel as though we weren't missing anything by growing up in a developing country."

Memories of Mary's early living conditions flooded her mind when she toured Augsburg's 60-year-old science building just a few months ago.

"The fact Augsburg can earn these amazing grants and work in this building is pretty mind boggling," she says when thinking about the building that looks nearly identical to what it did in the '60s when she first studied at Augsburg.

Now, Mary and her husband, David, want to ensure that Augsburg students don't feel they're missing anything either.

The Crofts have pledged a $25,000 gift for the AWE-inspired (Augsburg Women Engaged) student study lounge in the future Center for Science, Business, and Religion (CSBR). Because of this generous commitment, the AWE CSBR fundraising initiative has surpassed its initial $100,000 goal.

Through their gift, the Crofts are pleased to be playing an important part in making the Augsburg experience even more defining for students who will study in the future cross-disciplinary building.

"Having been a missionary, you make do with whatever is given to you," Mary says. The new AWE-inspired study lounge in the CSBR is what Mary would like to give to current and future Augsburg students.
