Webinar | Intercultural Competence & Global Learning

The Office of International Programs, The Center for Teaching and Learning, and General Education invite you to attend the following Webinar:

Intercultural Competence and Student Development:
Working Toward a Fuller Picture of Global Learning

A NAFSA ACADEMIC PROGRAMS FACULTY CONVERSATION

Date & Time: September 24, 2014, 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. (CDT)
Refreshments Served

Kick off the new academic year with this stimulating conversation that taps into NAFSA's growing community of practice focused on global learning.

Several instruments are designed to help locate college students on intercultural scales and measure changes in their perspectives over time. What does the data from these techniques reveal - and not - about students and their intercultural competence?

A distinguished panel will present an overview of these instruments and the data each provides. Participants will then join in the conversation to explore:

how students develop in ways that we are now learning to measure;
analyses and questions we need to illuminate such change;
pedagogies and learning experiences we can imagine to better align theory and practice
Faculty Conversations are designed for faculty members, researchers, and international educators interested in student learning outcomes and the educational experiences--curricular and co-curricular--created to help students gain and practice global knowledge, skills, and perspectives.

Kenneth Cushner, EdD
Professor, College of Education, Health, and Human Services, Kent State University

Helen Marx, PhD
Assistant Professor, Department of Elementary Education, Southern Connecticut State University

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

If you are interested in learning more about the McNair Scholars Program, please contact Lara Crombie, Program Assistant at crombie@augsburg.edu or (612) 330-1380 to schedule an appointment. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions about the program or if you're unsure whether or not you qualify.

Application Deadline: Monday, October 13, 4 p.m.

Augsburg Theater Department Auditions: Egg

The Augsburg Theater Arts Department will hold auditions for the student directed production, Egg, by Mark Steven Jensen, directed by Mawrgyn Roper. An audition sign-up sheet is posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater door in the atrium of Foss Center.

Theater Auditions:
Monday, September 22 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Tuesday from September 23 from 6:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
There will be no callbacks!

Casting: 2 female roles; 1 egg (of any gender)

Description of Egg: Bertha and Louise are wandering in an empty wasteland when they both spot an egg at the same time. Bertha wants to turn the egg into an omelet; Louise wants to paint the egg for Easter. They each try to convince the other to give up dibs on the egg. The debate turns more and more violent and events spiral out of control. The production will use highly physical performance techniques with puppetry and clowning to tell the story of two women and an egg.

Sign up for a slot on the theater door in the Foss Atrium and prepare a short piece of your choice (poem, lyrics, lines from a play, etc.) that incorporates movement. Your audition piece should be no longer than two minutes. The goal is to see you move with words. Try to tell a story with your body and the text. Don't overthink it! All ideas are right.

Copies of Egg are on the theater desk in the Campus Ministry suite (Foss 104). It is recommended that you read the entire play in order to have a sense of tone in the piece and the nature of the characters, which may help generate ideas for your audition piece.

Rehearsals will begin Monday, October 6.
Performance dates are Friday, November 14 through Sunday, November 16.

For any questions and concerns, please contact the director, Mawrgyn Roper at roperm@augsburg.edu or the stage manager, Em Warpula at warpula@augsburg.edu

Keeping Track of Auggies

Gift Announcement: Steve Nielsen '64

Several days each season, Steve Nielsen '64 (pictured with his wife, Becky Nielsen '65) can be found working his 80 acres of soybeans and corn in southwest Minnesota. "I like the serenity that comes with being out in the field: the time alone, sitting in a tractor cab, and the satisfaction that comes with the harvest," he explains. He's returning to his roots, working some of the same land he helped farm as a teenager. His roots also extend to Augsburg, where he has made gifts and pledges totaling $200,000 in support of the Center for Science, Business, and Religion. "I felt grateful that Augsburg allowed me to have some success in life, and I thought I should share that," Steve says.

Growing Years

These days farming is a hobby and a chance for some quiet time on the tractor, but back in the day it was a way of life for Steve's family and community. In the 1950s, most rural Minnesota schools weren't focused on preparing young people for college. "I knew other people from my high school who attended one or two semesters at the U of M and flunked out," says Steve, whose teachers had never asked him to write a term paper or read an entire book until he started college.

He was nervous about being underprepared, but he wanted to go to college and become a high school teacher and football coach. "That was all I knew: farming or teaching," he says. At Augsburg, he played football (even going up against future Vikings tackle Gary Larsen in a game against Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn.), and worked hard to make ends meet. One year during the football off-season, Steve and his roommate worked at a dairy processor in St. Paul, lugging 100-pound bags for eight hours, and getting home at 2 a.m. "That hurt my grades badly," remembers Steve. "But once you get started [with college], you don't quit, because it's an admission of failure." Attending chapel provided him with a respite from the whirlwind of work, classes, and football.

Cultivating a Career

After graduation Steve obtained a commission in the U.S. Navy and served four years, which included service in Vietnam. "When I came back, I realized that teaching wasn't for me," Steve remembers. "I didn't have the patience." He went to work as a field representative for Del Monte Foods, eventually rising to become vice president of vegetable production. He finished his career as vice president of supply chain management at Chiquita, and retired in 2006.

He is the immediate past chair of the Carver County Republicans, in which he has been active for many years. Steve and his wife Becky met at Augsburg, and have three daughters. They have 11 grandchildren; his granddaughter Morgan is just beginning her second year at Augsburg.

Planting the Seed for Future Students

Fifty years after graduating from Augsburg, Steve credits the college with helping him develop good judgment and teaching him how to work with other people. Steve's support of the Center for Science, Business, and Religion boosts the Class of 1964's response to the Class Challenge, which seeks to raise an average of $1 million from each class for the CSBR. "The only way that an institution like Augsburg can survive and thrive is with the support of alumni and friends," says Steve.
