Summer Conversations: Liberal Arts and Profession

Summer Conversations: Liberal Arts and Professional Studies. All faculty and staff welcome

Wed., June 18, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Mapping Knowledge / Mapping the World: James Ford Bell Library, 4th floor Wilson Library, U of MN
Marguerite Ragnow, curator of the Bell Library, will introduce us to some of the world's most extraordinary rare maps, including the Waldseemüller Map (1507) that named America, Olaus Magnus's imaginative Map of the Sea (1539), and much more. The collection was begun by James Ford Bell, President and Chair of General Mills between 1928 and 1948. These maps will surely stimulate conversations about the relationships among maps, politics and power, the decorative arts, scientific knowledge, travel, business and commerce, and of course history!
A catered picnic lunch and discussion will follow. If it's beautiful weather, we might walk to Bohemian Flats to eat. Contact Ginny McCarthy with any questions, concerns, or feedback

RSVP: mccarthy@augsburg.edu

This series aims to gather faculty and staff from across the College for discussions about what it means to "integrate the liberal arts and professional studies" at Augsburg. Each session includes lunch and a visit to an off-campus site chosen to stimulate rich conversations. No advance reading is necessary, although additional resources can be found on the General Education Moodle website.
