On-Campus GRE Prep Course - Register Now

Augsburg offers an eight week GRE prep course each summer for students and alumni at a cost well below those found at private test centers. This course is taught by Augsburg faculty and staff and walks students through each section of the general test. Throughout the course students complete sample test questions and receive in-depth feedback and instruction.

Tuesdays 4:00-6:30 p.m.
May 27-July 22
Cost: $75

Speaking Skills Workshop

The Speaking requirement in the General Education curriculum, like the Writing requirement, is embedded across most majors and programs at Augsburg and will be assessed campus-wide in 2014-15. This workshop aims to re-energize faculty to teach this skill. We will consider the elements of good oral communication and provide examples of how faculty across the disciplines can work to develop students' speaking skills, in both formal and interpersonal settings. All faculty are invited to attend.

Vice President Finance/Administration Interview

We will welcome to campus a third candidate for the position of Vice President of Finance and Administration. Campus community members are invited to an open forum 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, to meet Beth Reissenweber.

The forum will be in Oren Gateway Room 100.

$200 Summer Course Stipend

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: Looking for a summer education class to take? The Augsburg Paideia Program is offering a summer institute, July 28-31, 2014 on the pedagogy of Paideia. Learn how to implement inquiry-based discussions with students at all grade levels and subject areas. INS 255-A: Paideia Approach: Thinking, Talking, and Reading is a 4 semester course that includes the Paideia Institute.

Since the theme of this year's institute is on peace and justice, the President's Fund to Advance Peacemaking is awarding a $200 stipend to participating students. Please contact Anne Kaufman at kaufman@augsburg.edu regarding the stipend and registration. GRADUATE STUDENTS: Looking for a summer graduate-level education class to take? The Augsburg Paideia Program is offering a summer institute, July 28-31, 2014 on the pedagogy of Paideia. Learn how to implement inquiry-based discussions with students at all grade levels and subject areas. The ECS 543 course can be taken for either two or four graduate semester credits and can be counted as an elective course in the MAE program. The registration fee is less than regular graduate tuition and thanks to a grant from the President's Fund to Advance Peacemaking a $200 credit toward the registration fee is awarded. Town Hall & Governance Task Force Docs Now Online

The audio replay and slides from the May 5 Town Hall meeting with Augsburg Board of Regents Chair Jodi Harpstead are now available on the State of the College page.

To access the State of the College page, log into Inside Augsburg, click "College Reports" in the left menu, then click "State of the College 2013-14," which is the second bullet on the College Reports page.

The State of the College page also includes a recently posted transcript of the brief overview provided by President Pribbenow at the April 1 All Hands meeting before the group engaged in discussions facilitated by the Governance Task Force. We will also post a transcript of the May 5 Town Hall meeting on the State of the College page as soon as the transcription work is complete, which is targeted for next week.

Finally, please note that the Governance Task Force report, which was presented to the Board of Regents May 2, also is now available online. It is the first link on the College Reports page.

Missing Cart

We are missing the cart that we use to carry everything we need for events and on-campus activities. It was borrowed and not returned. If you have seen it, please return it to us in Oren Gateway Suite 300. It says ALUMNI RELATIONS on it's a flatbed. It is blue in color and a rolling cart. Event Announcements

Auggie Alumni at 612 Brewing

The first Auggie Alumni Summer Series event will take place next Tuesday at 612 Brewing. This event will feature a tour of the facility by 612 Brew master, one complimentary beverage, and a $5.00 food voucher for the Rusty Taco food truck. In addition, Augsburg College Prof. Michael Wentzel and Mighty Axe Hops founder Brian Krohn '08 will be on hand to discuss the science of brewing.

Additionally, we have assembled a panel of Augsburg women, including Lee Furman '61, Susan Allen '92, and Tina Nguyen '08 to share their stories with us.

But that is not all! You will get a chance to personally explore this question for yourself and participate in the discussion with your peers in small group discussions and through the larger group.

Paideia Summer Events

FACULTY: What is Paideia and how do you pronounce it? Paideia (pie-day-a) is a pedagogy that encourages inquiry-based discussions with others around a common text. It can be used with all ages and in all subject areas. The Augsburg College Paideia Program has been offering training to Augsburg faculty, staff, and students as well as to teachers throughout the United States for the past twenty-five years. We invite you to join us in celebrating our silver anniversary through several venues.

PAIDEIA WORKSHOP: This half-day training is offered through the Center for Teaching and Learning and the President's Fund to Advance Peacemaking. The workshop, Paideia: Putting Students in Charge of the Conversation, will be held May 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Riverside Room. Through an interactive seminar and coaching activity, we will explore the great idea of peace in a variety of readings along with the pedagogy of Paideia. Participation is limited to 20 faculty. Lunch will be provided along with a $20 gift certificate from Barnes and Noble. To register and receive the readings, contact Dr. Anne Kaufman at kaufman@augsburg.edu.

PAIDEIA INSTITUTE: This year marks the 25th annual Paideia Institute, July 28-31, 2014. The focus question this year is What Do Peace and Justice Look Like? These great and timeless ideas will be explored through a variety of genre along with coaching activities to assist you in facilitating seminars with your own curriculum.

Thanks again to PFAP, we are able to offer a $200 stipend to attend the summer Paideia Institute. Faculty can also apply to the Center for Teaching and Learning for travel funds up to $400 to cover the remaining portion of the registration fee. In Minnesota-speak, this is a heck-of-a-deal.

PAIDEIA CONFERENCE: Don't have four days available for the Paideia Institute? Attend our one-day Paideia Conference on Peace for a sampling of how teachers are engaging students in civil discourse. The conference is August 1, 2014 at Augsburg College. Stipends are also available to cover most of the conference fee.

Creating an Inclusive Campus Workshop May 12

Whether you have RSVP'd or not - you are invited to the Creating an Inclusive Campus workshop, Monday, May 12, 2014.

This is an important part of our diversity and inclusion initiative. The annual Creating an Inclusive Campus (CIC) workshop is tied to our on-going college mission commitment to "intentional diversity in our life and work."

The workshop will provide participants a better understanding of the student experience with results from recent student focus groups on issues of inclusion, an opportunity for continued growth in understanding inclusion and an opportunity to build skills in creating an inclusive campus and classrooms.

The workshop is from 9:00 - 12:00 noon in the East Commons. Continental breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m.

The workshop, which will be facilitated by Phyllis Braxton, is co-sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, Human Resources, and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
