April 1 Speaking of Scholarship with David Matz

The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Christensen Center for Vocation are pleased to jointly sponsor a new endeavor - "Speaking of Scholarship." This series will highlight the innovative work of Augsburg faculty in their respective fields of study.

We hope you can join us on Tuesday, April 1 at 4:00-5:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100. David Matz, Professor and Chair, Psychology Department will share his presentation, "What are you looking at? Inside the eye tracking lab."

Writing Retreat - Reserve Your Space

Faculty: do you wish you had uninterrupted time to write/work on scholarship? If so, you will want to take advantage of the annual Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat.

The retreat will take place at the Dunrovin Retreat Center outside Marine on St. Croix (www.dunrovin.org). The center will be open for our use from Sunday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. through Tuesday, May 20 at 1 p.m. (after lunch).

The Center for Teaching and Learning will cover the cost of the retreat. There will be no charge for participants.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research, and other scholarly activities. McNair teams scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops, and advising in preparation for graduate study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4,000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Hofrenning Elected as Councilor to CUR

Stella Hofrenning has been elected to serve a three year term as a councilor in the Social Sciences Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) beginning Summer 2014. In that position, Stella will act, on a national level, as an advocate on behalf of CUR in promoting continued expansion of undergraduate research opportunities. Congratulations, Stella!

Spanish Conversation: Travels in Chile

Practice your Spanish with us this Thursday while learning about Chile! Anita Fisher, Spanish professor, will share stories and photos of her travels to Chile over winter break. Join us to learn more about this interesting country. Even those with minimal Spanish experience will enjoy this presentation - all are welcome. Anita will speak from 12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.

The Spanish conversation group meets every Thursday in the Riverside Room, 2nd floor Christensen, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Signs will be posted. Join us for 10 minutes or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Feel free to bring your lunch.

College Muscle Movers - Today

AQIP Quality Checkup Visit: Faculty Forum

Over the past year and a half, we have been engaged in a process of review for reaffirmation of accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Augsburg College is accredited by the HLC via the Academic Quality Improvement Program or AQIP pathway. The AQIP pathway of accreditation is based on the Baldridge model for continuous improvement and focuses on examining, analyzing, and evaluating key processes at our institution. So far, our process for reaffirmation of accreditation has included:

-We submitted a Systems Portfolio report in November, 2012.

-A team of AQIP evaluators reviewed our Systems Portfolio and provided feedback in a Systems Appraisal report in April, 2013. Feedback included concerns in three main areas: assessment of student learning, planning, and effective use of data.

-A team of faculty and staff worked during the summer of 2013 to gather evidence of our activities in the areas of assessment of student learning, planning, and effective use of data.

-Teams of faculty and staff participated in the HLC AQIP Strategy Forum and Assessment Workshops during fall, 2013 to work on areas that were named as concerns in the Systems Appraisal.

-Using the evidence gathered and the work done at the HLC workshops, we developed an electronic portfolio of evidence for further review. AQIP reviewers and staff were given access to the portfolio in February, 2014.

-We developed a Quality Program Summary document that provides an overview of our AQIP activities and our efforts to support continuous improvement that was submitted to AQIP reviewers and staff in February, 2014.

-We completed the documentation required by the U. S. Department of Education to demonstrate that we are in compliance with federal regulations and submitted the documentation to AQIP reviewers and staff in February, 2014.

The next step in our reaffirmation of accreditation process is the Quality Checkup which will bring two AQIP reviewers to our campus for three days, April 2-4, 2014. The purpose of this visit is for the review team to learn about the progress we have made, particularly since our Systems Portfolio submission, and for the review team to suggest ways to improve our key processes. The review team is not responsible for deciding our reaccreditation. The two reviewers will meet with many groups on campus, including faculty, staff, students, and Regents.

Because there were concerns raised about assessment of student learning, planning, and effective use of data, those topics will be the focus of most of the meetings with our review team. We should expect that the Quality Checkup will include: candid, serious, and respectful conversations; an emphasis on the future and what strategies can move the institution forward; opportunities to discuss areas of strengths and how these may be used to improve quality; and opportunities to discuss challenges and how these may be mitigated.

YOU ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE QUALITY CHECKUP VISIT AS PART OF AN OPEN FORUM FOR THE REVIEW TEAM TO DISCUSS CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT WITH FACULTY. IT WILL TAKE PLACE ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 2014 FROM 4:15-5:15 PM, IN THE MARSHALL ROOM (CHRISTENSEN CENTER).

To prepare for the meeting, you should read the Quality Program Summary and the Systems Appraisal report. Both reports can be accessed on the College Reports website through Inside Augsburg (https://augnet.augsburg.edu/protected/administration/reports/).

The report developed by the Quality Checkup review team will be an important piece of information that, along with all of our AQIP Action Projects and reports since 2007, will be reviewed by a separate AQIP Panel on Reaffirmation to make a determination about our reaccreditation in February, 2015.

"Grand Entries," which are the start of a dance session are at 1 and 6 p.m. If you haven't been to a Powwow before we would encourage you to see a grand entry, however you are invited to come anytime throughout the day. There will be Craft Vendors, information vendors about community resources/organizations, concession stand with Indian tacos for sale and a lot of fun and opportunity to learn. Please join us.

At 3 p.m., Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community will be honored by Augsburg College for their gift to provide endowed student scholarships. Regent Bonnie Wallace will speak on behalf of the college. American Indian graduates from the class of 2014 will be honored.

Spring All Hands Meeting - Tuesday, April 1

The spring 2014 All Hands meeting is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, April 1, in Hoversten Chapel.

The agenda will include brief updates on current topics -- enrollment, fundraising, accreditation, strategic planning, the work of the Governance Task Force, and the progress of the due diligence process on the potential opportunity in Phoenix -- followed by a reflection and conversation led by members of the Governance Task Force. The Task Force will be seeking input on 2-3 tentative ideas around ways to improve governance at the College and will make those ideas available by Friday, March 28, for review in advance of the meeting

Mitri is the pastor of the Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem and a leading Palestinian Christian theologian, writer, and activist. This event is free and open to the public.

Spring Blood Drive Coming 3/31

Win $100 in TicketMaster Bucks: Prompt Competition

Augsburg College Admissions is looking for a new essay prompt for first-year students.

The prize is $100 in TicketMaster bucks towards a concert, game, or other event of the winner's choosing.

We ask that submissions be emailed to devens@augsburg.edu.

Faculty, staff, and students are able to submit prompt ideas. Essay prompts should be original, creative, and inspired. We're asking writers to submit prompts that they would have wanted to use when writing their college essays or would like to see students write for their college essays. The submissions can be a single sentence or an entire paragraph. The point is to have fun, be creative, and showcase the vibrant and dynamic Augsburg community!

The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2014.

Health Commons Supply Drive

The Augsburg Central Health Commons is a community outreach program held at Central Lutheran Church in Downtown Minneapolis, which provides basic medical services and health education to people of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds free of charge. The mission of the Health Commons is to promote health and healing in marginalized populations. Donations are the primary way that the Health Commons is able to provide these services to its visitors.

The Health Commons will be holding a Supply Drive, sponsored by MPIRG, during the week of April 7-11, 2014. Below is a list of items requested for donation:
-men's white socks (new)
-feminine pads (not tampons)
-large size diapers (size 4, 5, 6, or pull-ups)
-travel size shampoo
-travel size conditioner
-travel size soap
-travel size toothpaste
-travel size lotion
-deodorant
-razors
-cough drops
-baby wipes

Keep in mind that many of these items can be purchased for low cost at a local dollar store. If you are able to donate, your contribution is very much appreciated!

ABO: Timberwolves Game Outing

Join members of the Augsburg Business Organization for an outing to see the MN Timberwolves play the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, April 2. We have a block of tickets available for $10 each located at center court on the second deck. Tickets are available for ABO members as well as all Augsburg students. Larry & Cheryl '89 Crockett Support CSBR

Augsburg colleagues use many words to describe the significance of the Center for Science, Business, and Religion (CSBR): creation, innovation, and inspiration, to cite just a few. When Larry and Cheryl '89 Crockett talk about the CSBR, however, they can boil its relevance and promise down to just one: conversation.

Ploughshare Farm, established in 2002, is a certified organic farm that grows a wide variety of organic vegetables and some fruits on 160 acres boarding the Chippewa River in central Minnesota. Ploughshare Farm, named an "Edible Twin Cities" Local Hero in the Best Farm/Farmer category, is owned by Gary Brever, winner of a 2012 Minnesota Jaycees' Farmer of the Year Award. Gary is one of Minnesota's leading authorities on organic farming. Beyond being a frequent speaker and leader at organic farming conferences, Gary was one of two Minnesota farmers selected to go to Washington to discuss 2012 farm legislation. He also was a recent featured guest on Lynne Rossetto Kasper's "The Splendid Table."
