Ignore the Snow - Gardening is Coming - Apply Now

With another blizzard descending, it's good to remember that spring is on its way. It's a great time now to put warm, happy thoughts in our minds, and apply or reapply for a plot in the Augsburg Community Garden.

The Community Garden is composed primarily of individual plots, and it's open to anyone connected to the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Our prior gardeners are expected to reapply every year. It's the only way we can keep track of over 100 gardeners. The application also has some pieces to get your feedback on how we did, and what we as managers and we as a community can do better in 2014.

www.augsburg.edu/campuskitchen/communitygarden

Please take a moment now to fill out this form so you're in the system, and we can start getting your feedback as we plan out the coming months. Also feel free to share this with your friends or neighbors. This can also be printed out and returned to Campus Kitchen, 2211 Riverside Ave, Campus Box 108 for those who don't do computers.

Attend the Food Waste and Hunger Summit in IL

The 2014 Food Waste and Hunger Summit will be held on April 5-6 at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL (near Chicago) and the Campus Kitchen would like to bring a group of students to attend! The Summit convenes student leaders who are pioneering solutions to the interrelated problems of food insecurity and food waste. The Summit gives students a forum to learn from experts in the fields of social justice, social enterprise, public health, non-profit management and related fields in addition to the opportunity to share best practices.

We will cover transportation and lodging for Augsburg students who would like to go. Students will only be required to cover the $35 conference registration fee and meals. Since the conference will take place on Saturday and Sunday, we would leave for Evanston on Friday afternoon (April 4) and leave to return home on Sunday afternoon (April 6).

If you've been with the Campus Kitchen for a while, this will be a fantastic opportunity to deepen your knowledge about and ideas for student-driven solutions to fighting food waste and hunger. If you're new to this work, this is a wonderful chance to gain an in-depth introduction to the topic. It will also be pretty fun to spend a weekend with other young people passionate about social change. We are willing to bring along anyone who wants to learn more about these topics, so feel free to direct friends our way, whether or not they've been involved with the Campus Kitchen before!

If you would like to attend, please contact me at kimball@augsburg.edu by Friday, February 28. If you can let me know sooner, that's even better!
