Paid Summer Research Opportunities

Many Augsburg students apply for summer research programs throughout the country. Last year Augsburg students could be found conducting research at Johns Hopkins, The National Institute of Standards and Technology, The University of Minnesota, The Mayo Clinic, and more.

Fulbright Summer Institutes Applications Available

The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for U.S. citizens to go to the U.K. These summer programs provide the opportunity for U.S. undergraduates (over age 18), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to the U.K. for a three, four, five, or six week academic and cultural summer program.

The program looks for students who display leadership qualities and initiative, academic ability, character, adaptability and ambassadorial qualities and requires a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Please email urgo@augsburg.edu or stop by the URGO office by this week if you would like to apply. Applications for the Summer Institutes are due February 27 or March 6 based on program.

Batalden Faculty Scholar

Faculty are invited to submit proposals by February 14, 2014-

Purpose
In 1981 Abner Batalden, Class of 1936, established and endowed the Batalden Symposium on Applied Ethics. Since that time his two sons, Paul and Steve, both Augsburg alumnus, and their families, have generously added to the Batalden endowment, with the goal of establishing an Endowed Chair in Applied Ethics. The purpose of the fund and symposium has been to "Foster learning in applied ethics ...[and] make ethics pertinent to life in general, for example, in relation to war and peace, government, industrial life, responsibility to developing nations ...and at times the lectures ought to relate to specific professions" (The Batalden Applied Ethics Fund, 1981). As the fund has now reached a level that will support wider activity, the Batalden family has proposed that the endowment be utilized to establish the Batalden Faculty Scholar Program in Applied Ethics. It is our hope that this initiative will pave the way for an Endowed Chair in Ethics at Augsburg College.

Overview
The Batalden Faculty Scholar will bring leadership to a variety of opportunities to explore applied ethics. This will include, but not be limited to, designing and offering an advanced level course, facilitating student research projects, assisting the Convocation Committee in bringing authorities in the field of Applied Ethics to campus each year, and promoting ways to strengthen the infusion of ethics and values into our lives, so that ethical discourse and practice is enhanced as a hallmark of Augsburg's students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The Batalden Faculty Scholar Program invites all Augsburg faculty full time and adjunct to apply for this award. Applicants will be expected to supply research and course proposals that promise to engage the College community in broad conversations about ethics across disciplines.
Expected Scholarly Activity
* Create and teach, within a specific discipline, an upper division or graduate course in applied ethics (including development of a formal syllabus for the course)
* Provide leadership in developing and conducting the annual Batalden Ethics Symposium/Convocation [Spring term each year]
* Lead in promoting interdisciplinary conversations across campus with the goal of expanding ethical understanding and behavior among our graduates, the campus and wider community. This activity might take the form, for example, of a summer research colloquium bringing together faculty members from across various disciplines to explore issues in applied ethics from their diverse perspectives. Funding will be available for this sort of activity.
* Serve as a resource for subsequent awardees and others interested in the purpose of the Program.
* Administer stipends up to total of $5,000 for student research/class activity at either undergraduate or graduate level; or combined "slash" courses (where undergraduate and graduate students study together)

Award Parameters
* Award is for 3 fte annually as part of a full time contract or as a stipend for adjunct faculty member.
* Award will be based in part on a plan for the use of the time and the development of a course with outline of syllabus, along with overall support of the program purpose.
* Award will be from 1 3 years in duration.
* Program will be administered by the Provost, in consultation with the Faculty and President of the College.

Selection Process
A committee will be appointed and chaired by the Dean and will include three faculty plus one Regent. The application letter should include a brief plan for use of time and development of a course with outline of the syllabus, together with updated resume. The application should also include a letter of support from the department chair, with specific plans for supporting the Scholar's time away from the department, if selected. Applications should be sent to Judi Green (greenj@augsburg.edu). Proposers should feel free to contact Matt Maruggi, current Batalden Scholar, with any questions about the content of the proposal and/or the work of the Batalden Scholar.

The Batalden Faculty Scholar Committee will review proposals by March 5, 2014. The Scholar will be named by March 15, 2014, and will be able to begin his/her program as early as summer 2015.

MHTA STEM Scholarships

MHTA STEM Scholarships

Applications are currently being accepted for the Minnesota High Tech Association Foundation (MHTF) Scholarship. The scholarships are for Minnesota undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. These awards include $2,500 and $5,000 awards and can include internship opportunities at MHTA member companies. MHTF is committed to developing a well-educated technology literate workforce and supports diversity in this application and award process.

Two Augsburg STEM students have received this scholarship in the past. Please contact Rebekah Dupont, director of STEM Programs at Augsburg, dupont@augsburg.edu, if you are interested, or if you would like to recommend a student.

Eligibility requirements:
- Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM field or in STEM teaching
- Only students with sophomore through senior academic status in the current school year may apply. Sophomore status may include students who have achieved this status through advanced placement (AP) credit or post-secondary options (PSEO)s
- Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited, Minnesota-based higher education institution.
- In addition to traditional STEM fields, health science majors whose studies will not lead to participation in direct patient care are welcome to apply.
- Scholarships will be awarded in the fall term of 2014 and presented to recipients at MHTA's Tekne Awards in November. Students must be enrolled at time of award.
- Deadline for application is April 1, 2014.

2014 Regional Spelling Bee - 1 More Judge Needed

Augsburg is excited to host the 2014 Minnesota Seven County Metro Area Regional Spelling Bee on March 15, 2014. The winner of the bee goes on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee which makes this event lots of fun!

We are in need of ONE more judge to be part of the event. Please plan to arrive in the Foss Atrium at 11 a.m. for a brief training. Lunch will be provided. The event should conclude around 5 p.m.

Dave St. Peter joined the Twins in 1990 and was named president in 2002. He oversees the team's day-to-day operations, strategic planning and interaction with Major League Baseball. Join us to learn about a fascinating industry!

Light refreshments will be available prior to the event and a free pizza dinner will be served after the event.

If you plan to participate in Zyzzogeton this year or will be presenting at another conference, please join Tina Tavera of McNair and Kirsten O'Brien of URGO for a poster-making info session this Thursday from 3:30-4:30 in Sverdrup 201. We will discuss content, layout, and design. You will also have the opportunity to work on your poster and receive feedback. Posters are due March 14, so now is the best time to start!

Careers in Public Service

All students are invited to a session on careers in public service. Commissioner Peter McLaughlin (Hennepin County) and Councilmember Danna Elling-Schultz (city of Hastings, and also DFL researcher in Minnesota State Senate)will talk about their paths to public service and offer suggestions for students interested in careers there. State Senator Dan Hall was originally scheduled to attend but cannot make it. However, State Senator Kari Dziedzic will attend and share her experiences. Senator Dziedzic represents the Augsburg area.

The Christensen Center for Vocation is pleased to invite Augsburg Faculty and Staff to our winter Vocation Lunch with Carol Enke on Wednesday, February 26 at 12:30 p.m.

Health and Physical Education Instructor Carol Enke will share reflections on her vocation journey in a talk entitled, "I Play to Get Paid." This event includes a complimentary lunch. MNsure Info Sessions

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will be hosting a FREE MNsure informational workshop on Thursday 2/20 from 7 - 8 p.m. at Mount Olivet Church, 5025 Knox Avenue So in Minneapolis.

Participants will learn about health insurance options, value of coverage, options under MNsure, medical assistance expansion, changes to Minnesota Care (MN Care) and the benefits to people with mental illnesses.

Temp Job at Child Care

Community Child Care Center (located on the Saint Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota) is looking for a temporary Kitchen Support Staff Person. This position is Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. and is 40 hours a week but can be split into two 20 hour positions if necessary. This temporary position will last until the end of March or beginning of April.

The person selected for this position will maintain a sanitary, organized, and efficient kitchen environment. This person will prepare and deliver breakfast and lunch to three classrooms, will clean the eating environment, and will wash the necessary dishes after each meal.
