Keeping Track of Auggies

Michelle Grafelman Wins Vann Fellowship

Augsburg Presidential Scholar, Michelle Grafelman, was recently awarded the 2014 Vann Fellowship in Biomedical Ethics at The Mayo Clinic. As a summer fellow, she will work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics (Associate Director, Regent Paul Mueller) to examine issues such as end-of-life-care, genetic therapies, and patient consent, among others. The competitive applicant pool included students from five colleges in Minnesota, and the junior biology major and math minor was the sole in-state student selected.

Michelle plans to become a physician in the future and has built a solid academic foundation in her three years at Augsburg, earning a 4.0 GPA, participating in the Honors Program, and serving on the Pre-Med Club leadership team. Chosen last summer to be one of ten Sundquist Scholars to conduct STEM research on campus, Michelle is already an accomplished research assistant. Her work in biology, funded by the generous gift of Dean and Amy Sundquist and supervised by Professor Matt Beckman, has helped her develop important research skills within molecular biology and she is continuing this work through an academic-year research grant from Augsburg's Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. Michelle has taken advantage of the many opportunities a small campus provides, including leading the flute section in the Augsburg Concert Band and writing communion worship prayers for service each Wednesday. Please join us in congratulating Michelle on her fellowship!

Nodland Family Sponsors CSBR Classroom

In the late 1970s, when many college students were taking to the streets in protest, Augsburg students (including Jeff and Becky) spent some college weekends traveling in station wagons to area churches. They spent their time singing songs, sharing their passion for faith and dedicating themselves to service to others and the church. Jeff and Becky met on one of these weekends and formed a partnership that has lasted for over 30 years. To this day, their eagerness and enthusiasm for Augsburg shine through. 'It was life altering to attend Augsburg," said Becky.

To meet and know Jeff Nodland '77 and Becky Bjella Nodland '79 is to experience enthusiasm and positive energy along with a passion for Augsburg. Both currently volunteer for the College--Jeff, CEO of KIK Custom Products, also serves as a member of the Board of Regents and Becky as an active alum who appreciates the work of the Music Department. They are even more engaged now because their daughter, Emily, transferred to Augsburg this fall and is a sophomore studying early childhood and elementary education.

Host Families Needed

Hello! My name is Melinda McCannell-Unger, Host Family Coordinator for InfoLink International Education Institute. Currently, we are looking for warm, loving, traditional families to host some wonderful students from China! I work in partnership with the University of Minnesota on a short term semester at UMN called Education for a Global Citizen program. The University of Minnesota provides the academic program for the students and we, InfoLink, coordinate recruitment in China and housing here in Minnesota. We have about 15 college age students (18-23 yrs.) from China visiting our country to attend this full time study program for Spring Semester 2014 (February 26-June 16).

The students are here to learn about America first hand by living with an American family and to practice their English. Beyond what they will learn in the classroom they are encouraged to spend time with you and your family to really understand what makes America work on every level.

We are looking for families to take one (or possibly two) students (two same gender students sharing a bedroom is OK) into their home. The simple requirements will be that you provide a separate bedroom and bathroom for the students (the bathroom may be shared with any or all other family members), an English environment-and your friendship. Students will be provided with a bus pass: which is good on MTC buses as well as the U of M Campus Connector. We require host families to live within one hour commute to the University of Minnesota.

Beyond the pleasure of making new friends and building the bonds between our country and China, you will be paid a monthly stipend of $500 per student.

For more information please contact Melinda at 612-750-5154 or email at melinda@infolinkgroup.com
