Please be aware that due to academic schedule changes and the increase in summer activities, Public Safety will require parking permits to be displayed throughout the summer in 2014. Any 2013-14 academic year permit will be acceptable. For example, if a student purchases a fall 2013 permit, that same permit can be used throughout the summer at no extra cost to the student. More information regarding summer 2014 will be available next spring.

New Building Hours and Card Access Improvements
*These changes are part of our on-going review of our Campus Emergency Procedures & Preparedness Plans.

Throughout the next few months, you will notice changes to the way in which you are able to access campus buildings. Public Safety will be designating main entrances to campus buildings and with the help of Facilities Management providing focused lighting as well as surveillance cameras on these areas. This will assist us in creating safer spaces for the Augsburg Community. In addition to our focused security efforts, we have installed card access on main building entrances. Card access has been recently installed in areas of Christensen Center, Old Main, Music, Foss, Sverdrup, and the Ice Arena. Public Safety will begin to lock the academic building entrances after normal peak business hours. Students, Faculty, and Staff will continue to have access to buildings throughout the evenings using a "fob." This allows easier access to Faculty, Staff, and Students during non-peak hours when the buildings may have fewer classes or events happening within. Many in our campus community already use a fob to access their residence hall, the fitness center, or other secured areas on campus. The fob is simply swiped at an access reader and the door momentarily unlocks, allowing for access. The benefits of this system are two-fold:

-Augsburg students, faculty, and staff can gain entry to the facilities in which they need to do their work.
- The entrance will be well lit and frequently used; safer for those coming and going in the quieter hours.

Augsburg Students, Staff, and Faculty who do not currently have an access fob may request one at www.augsburg.edu/dps/locksmith/. Access to restricted areas within a dept. must be requested by the Key authorizer for the area. A list of authorizers can be found online. Access to general community spaces such as the fitness center can be requested by any faculty, staff, or student. Please allow at least two business days for us to process the request. Once you have received a confirmation e-mail that the request has been fulfilled, your fob can then be picked up at the Public Safety Dispatch desk in the Urness/Mortensen lobby with your photo ID. We appreciate your assistance in these changes. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns.

Timeline:
Now- August 16. Those who do not currently have a fob or access card, should request one through the online request form at www.augsburg.edu/dps/locksmith/
August 16- Sept. 3. Communication regarding specific building hours will be sent via campus email and A-Mail. New campus building hours will take effect.

*The Christensen Center and the Lindell Library will continue to be open until the building closes, rather than having limited access after business hours. These buildings will continue to be public buildings, open and available to our surrounding community to use.

What about event groups using our campus? Event groups who have scheduled to use our building space after business hours can continue to do so. Those being sponsored by an on campus person, dept., or group should meet their attendees at the entrance of the building to welcome them in. External groups, not sponsored by an on campus person, dept., or group can access the building by calling Public Safety.

Integrated Course Design Workshop

All faculty are invited to participate in a workshop designed to enhance your instructional design skills and discover ways to incorporate online learning in your courses. It is particularly critical for Augsburg for Adults and graduate faculty who are creating "hybrid" courses for 2013-14.

The Integrated Course Design for Hybrid Learning is a hands-on workshop that introduces Augsburg's Moodle Template for developing your course in accordance with GAAC/AAC requirements and a Course Design Support site to provide additional detail and examples for Moodle applications. In this workshop, you will explore Fink's model for course design, which integrates situational factors, learning goals, learning activities, and assessment. We will also address how to choose face-to-face and online activities to create an engaging learning experience, provide direct instruction, and facilitate active, collaborative learning. Workshops will be held on:

Loss of One of the Quad Elms

Despite regular injection treatments coordinated by the Augsburg College grounds crew, intended to prevent the spread of the disease, the elm tree in the northwest corner of the Quad has succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease. Once a tree is fully engaged with the disease, there is no other treatment option available except to remove the tree to lessen the chance of the disease spreading to adjacent elms.

Bruce Rowe has coordinated the removal, in conjunction with Blue Chip Tree Company, and they will be performing that work today. The remaining trees will then have their injection treatments updated, and later this fall, when the trees go dormant, additional pruning of dead wood and reduction of the tree canopies will be done as added prevention.

Open Student Staff Positions with Residence Life

The Department of Residence Life is currently seeking to fill multiple student staff positions for the academic year. Descriptions of the open positions are listed below. Please send any interested persons to the Human Resources employment web page to apply.

Residential Facilities Coordinator (RFC): The RFC provides leadership within the Department of Residence Life with overall community programming, facilities management, policy creation, and projects for the residential areas. By working collaboratively with other RFCs and Central Staff members, the individual provides overall leadership and direction for Residence Life in the student living areas. As a lead staff member, RFCs serve as a resource on campus while assisting the Residence Hall Director with community building, administrative, and organizational efforts to ensure the success, development, growth, and retention of students. Residential Executive Coordinator (REC): The REC provides leadership within the Department of Residence Life by assisting with the facilitation of development of a specific community. RECs have direct contact with residents living in the residence halls and as such play a pivotal role in the day-to-day operations of the community. The REC works with the supervising Residence Hall Director to support the mission of the Department of Residence Life and Augsburg College. As a lead staff member, RECs serve as a resource on campus while assisting the Residence Hall Director with community building, administrative, and organizational efforts to ensure the success, development, growth, and retention of students. Housing Specialists Assistant (HSA): The HSA provides leadership within the Department of Residence Life by assisting the Housing Specialist in supporting the mission of the department. The HSA has direct contact with current residents, prospective residents, and families as related to occupancy management and resident satisfaction. As a lead staff member, the HSA position is highly administrative located in an office setting requiring a 20-hour week commitment during the academic year and 40-hour week commitment during the summer months. Resident Advisor (RA), Community Advisor (CA), Steward: Residence Life student staff members at Augsburg have many different roles. They are peer advisors, community builders, academic resource people, programmers, and administrators. RAs/CA/Stewards spend a significant amount of time getting to know residents as individuals and generating enthusiasm as they bring students together to create communities. RAs/CA/Stewards achieve this objective by aiding residents through implementing respectful, resourceful, and responsible activities, by fostering the growth of active student governance, by providing information about college resources, by informing residents about residence hall regulations, and facilitating the implementation of these regulations.

Resident Advisors work specifically with first-year populations. Stewards work primarily with Anderson Hall Neighborhoods. Community Advisors work in Mortensen, Luther, and Oren Gateway. The MFA in Creative Writing is Officially Underway

Augsburg's inaugural cohort will arrive on campus Thursday for a ten-day residency and literary festival of classes, workshops, open mikes and eight nights of public readings and screenings.

Public events begin Friday evening, July 26, with MFA mentors Stephan Clark and Jack El-Hai reading from their work.

Saturday evening, July 27, screenwriter Christina Lazaridi will be here for the screening of "One Day Crossing," the film that earned her an Oscar nomination.

On Monday, July 29, the evening reading will feature prize-winning creative nonfiction writer Sue William Silverman.

MFA mentors Cary Waterman and Cass Dalglish will read on Tuesday, July 30.

Nationally recognized Poet Ed Bok Lee will be the guest reader on Wednesday, July 31.

On Friday, Aug. 2, the MFA program will host the acclaimed fiction writer, Benjamin Percy.

All readings are scheduled in the Tjornholm Nelson Theater, Foss Center. The Lazaridi screening has been moved to Sateren Auditorium. All events begin at 7:30 p.m. and are open to the public.

The Central Park Five, directed and produced by Ken Burns, David McMahon and Sarah Burns, tells the story of the five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in New York City's Central Park in 1989. The film chronicles The Central Park Jogger case, for the first time from the perspective of these five teenagers whose lives were upended by this miscarriage of justice.
