In Sacred Ground, author and renowned interfaith leader and last semester's Christensen Convocation speaker Eboo Patel says this prejudice is not just a problem for Muslims but a challenge to the very idea of America. Patel shows us that Americans from George Washington to Martin Luther King Jr. have been "interfaith leaders," illustrating how the forces of pluralism in America have time and again defeated the forces of prejudice. And now a new generation needs to rise up and confront the anti-Muslim prejudice of our era. To this end, Patel offers a primer in the art and science of interfaith work, bringing to life the growing body of research on how faith can be a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier of division and sharing stories from the frontlines of interfaith activism.

Most people want to be successful in life. And of course, everyone wants to be happy. When it comes to the pursuit of success and happiness, most people assume the same formula: if you work hard, you will become successful, and once you become successful, then you'll be happy. The only problem is that a decade of cutting-edge research in the field of positive psychology has proven that this formula is backwards. Success does not beget happiness. Shawn Achor shares seven core principles of positive psychology that each one of us can use to improve our performance, grow our careers, and gain a competitive edge at work. He reveals how happiness actually fuels success and performance, not the other way around. Why? Because when we are happier and more positive we are more engaged, creative, resilient to stress, and productive. The Happiness Advantage will appeal to anyone who wants practical advice on how to become happier and also more successful.

Nominations Open for 2012 Outstanding Staff Awards
Staff Senate is seeking nominations for the 2012 Augsburg College Outstanding Staff Awards. This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions.
To be considered for this award, the nominee must have a complete nomination packet that includes:

Internship Opportunity in China for Augsburg Grads
Internship Opportunity in China for 2013 Grads and Alums
The United International College (UIC), Augsburg's partner college in Zhuhai, China, is recruiting college graduates for a one year teaching internship with undergraduate students. Graduates in any discipline may apply. Responsibilities include tutoring, reviewing papers and leading co-curricular club activities.
Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and an excellent command of written and spoken English. Internships are available in the following academic departments: English Language Centre; Teaching English as a Second Language; English Literature; Computer Science and Technology; Applied Psychology; Business and Administration; and Public Relations & Advertising. Ally Trainings are offered for all faculty, staff, and students at Augsburg College to gain knowledge, skills, and resources around being intentionally supportive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) communities. Participants will learn about LGBTQIA history and culture, confront myths and stereotypes, discuss heterosexual and gender-conforming privilege, discuss potential scenarios, ask questions in a safe environment, and discuss next steps on how to be an effective ally to LGBTQIA individuals at Augsburg.

Benefit Concert for Avenues for Homeless Youth
Announcing: New Day Rising --- Vocal Point Chorus's Annual Benefit Concert featuring Jearlyn Steele and the Youth Chorale of Central Minnesota
Who benefits? You - the music will be great. But more importantly Avenues for Homeless Youth, a non-profit that provides emergency shelter, short-term housing and supportive services for homeless youth.
When? February 9 and 10 at 4 p.m.
Where? Central Presbyterian Church, Downtown St. Paul
How does it work? Buy a ticket ($15 Adults/$5 Students advance sales or $20 adults at the door). Ticket revenue supports cost of production. Bring a free-will donation to the concert, 100% of which will go to support Avenues for Homeless Youth.
