Themes in American Indian Literature

AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature

This spring trimester, American Indian Studies is offering AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature for WEC. This class meets Sundays 1:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.

The course is structured around a number of writers working within a particular theme such
as Native Voices of Minnesota, Voices from the Southwest, Poetics and Politics of Native
Writing, Women and Power in Native Literature, Urban-Reservation: Homing, and American
Indian film-literature adaptation. Students focus on primary texts, comparing and
contrasting theme, voice, aesthetic, or cultural emphasis as it shifts or arises across the
group of texts. Course cross-lists with English.

(Prereq.: ENL 220 or 221, or a 200-level literature course, or consent of instructor.)

Have You Found the Writing Lab?

The Augsburg College Writing Lab is located in Lindell Library (street level, left of the circulation desk). Last term, tutors in the lab conducted almost 1300 sessions working with students on their writing assignments and they can help you, too. No appointments are taken; just stop by. Hours are as follows:

Monday: 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. & 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 12:00-2:30 p.m.; 3:00-5:30 p.m. & 7:30-10:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 3:00-5:30 p.m. & 6:30-9:00 p.m.
Thursday: 12:00-2:30 p.m.; 3:00-5:30 p.m. & 7:30-10:00 p.m.

Micheale Tesema Awarded 2012 MN TRIO Scholarship

Micheale Tesema ’14 has been selected to receive one of three competitive scholarships sponsored by Minnesota TRIO, the state professional organization of TRIO staff. The Paul and Sheila Wellstone Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of the late senator and his wife by supporting a deserving college student who maintains a high GPA, demonstrates the ability to set and achieve goals, and who actively participates in and uses TRIO support. Twenty-seven TRIO programs nominated their top students to receive this scholarship, and Micheale was selected for his essay reflecting his academic acumen and resiliency, combined with a stellar nomination letter from his TRIO Advisor, Melody Martagon-Geiger.

Micheale will speak about his educational journey and accept his award at the 2012 Minnesota TRIO Day Student Leadership Conference, held at Lake Superior College in Duluth tomorrow, February 25.

Native American Film Series - 2011-2012 Season

Where Condor Meets Eagle: Indigenous Bolivian and Native American Film Festival and Cultural Exchange is a three-night film festival celebrating Indigenous film, collaborations across national boundaries, and visual storytelling. Come see world class films from Bolivia, Canada, and Minnesota and meet some of the filmmakers, engage in conversation, and enjoy three great evenings for free. Filmmakers from Bolivia will be present, all films in Spanish will be translated, and lovers of film are welcome.

Photo Exhibit features Women from Ethiopia

Enjoy the photography of Oromo women from Ethiopia, presented by Tsehai Wodajo, Augsburg graduate and founder of Resources of the Enrichment of African Lives (REAL). The event is co-sponsored by the Women's Resource Center.

"I'm eager for more people to learn about the challenges faced by Ethiopian women, and to be inspired by how these women pass along hope and perseverance to the next generation," said Ms. Wodajo.

Wodajo, who also is a senior social worker for Hennepin County, will share her personal story, and speak about her work. Her story also is intended to help promote education of girls in Ethiopia. She will be joined by other presenters who will talk about the history and culture of the Oromo people with a focus on the role of women in shaping their culture. Other presenters include Peri Klemm, associate professor of art history from California State University at Northridge, and Martha Kuwee Kumsa, associate professor of social work from Wilfred Laurier University.

The exhibit is open from 1-4 PM, February 25-26th in Foss Center; the cultural presentations will occur from 2-3 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium on both days.

Restorative Justice Benefit Concert

Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Partnership 3rd Annual Benefit Concert

Sunday, March 11, 2:00-4:00 pm at Faith Mennonite Church, (2720 E 22nd St.) Songsters and instrumentalists: Ray Makeever (Augsburg Campus Ministry), Linda Breitag, Sophia Breitag, Chris Jones and Robin Nelson. There will be folk songs, songs of peace, roots music, Celtic fiddling, serious silliness, and YOU singing along. Freewill donations gratefully accepted.

Since 2004, Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Partnership has provided an alternative to juvenile court for youth committing misdemeanor offenses in Seward and Greater Longfellow. Join family and neighbors to support an essential program in our community.
