Intro to American Indian Studies

Looking for classes to take in the spring?

The American Indian Studies department has Introduction to American Indian Studies: (AIS 105) for this spring trimester. This class meets on Sundays 1:00-5:00pm.

This class is designed to introduce students to the content areas of the American Indian studies curriculum, this course includes an overview of American Indian history, federal Indian policy, land issues, reservation and urban issues, cross-cultural influences, and American Indian literature, art, music, and language.

AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature

This spring trimester, American Indian Studies is offering AIS/ENL 355 Themes in American Indian Literature for WEC. This class meets Sundays 1:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.

The course is structured around a number of writers working within a particular theme such as Native Voices of Minnesota, Voices from the Southwest, Poetics and Politics of Native Writing, Women and Power in Native Literature, Urban-Reservation: Homing, and American Indian film-literature adaptation. Students focus on primary texts, comparing and contrasting theme, voice, aesthetic, or cultural emphasis as it shifts or arises across the group of texts. Course cross-lists with English.

(Prereq.: ENL 220 or 221, or a 200-level literature course, or consent of instructor.)

Each year, approximately 1,500 Americans traveling more than 130 countries receive support from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Program participants pursue graduate or professional study, advanced research or English teaching in elementary and secondary schools or universities.

Free Lockers Available for Students

Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus. 13th Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the 13th annual Augsburg Leadership Awards! Submit your Abstract for Zyzzogeton Poster Fair

Calling all student researchers: participate in the Zyzzogeton Poster Fair -sponsored by LSAMP, McNair & URGO.

ABSTRACTS ARE DUE FEBRUARY 24th

*You do not have to have done research with URGO to participate.

The poster session will be held on April 12th, 2012 from 3-5 pm.

URGO/McNair/LSAMP will cover the cost of posters submitted by Wednesday, March 28. Printing costs for posters submitted after March 28th will not be covered. To submit your poster, email it to urgo@augsburg.edu.

Work with your faculty mentor to develop and edit your poster. If you want assistance with designing or editing your poster please attend a poster making workshop on February 22 OR March 8 from 4-5:15 pm in SVE 201.

The Staff Senate invites the community to nominate staff in order to acknowledge their accomplishments and contributions. The recipients of the Staff Recognition Award will be recognized at the Staff Appreciation Event, March 8th.

To nominate a member of the staff, please complete the Nomination Form, including two letters of recommendation. The nomination form and letters are due by Friday, February 17, at 4:00pm to Missy Motl (CB 314).

This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions. Alumna Gaby Hamerlinck graduated in 2010 with a double major in biology and mathematics. While at Augsburg, she did research in mathematical biology with John Zobitz and Augsburg student Kayla Johnson. She was a McNair Scholar, a North Star STEM Fellow, and a member of both the women's soccer and track teams. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in biology at the University of Iowa, where she is studying phylogenetic relationships of Rhagoletis fruit flies and their associated parasitic wasps as well as mathematically modeling preadaptive traits to predict the outcomes of evolutionary competitions. On Friday, February 10, she will visit Augsburg with several other graduate students in STEM fields to discuss the graduate school experience.

Whole Leaders See Things Whole, Tom Morgan, Feb 16

Augsburg's Center for Leadership Studies invites you to attend a workshop entitled "Whole Leaders See Things Whole," presented by Tom Morgan.

Date: Thursday, February 16
Time: 5:30 p.m. social time with refreshments; 6:00-8:00 p.m. presentation
Location: Kennedy Center, Room 303

This workshop, first presented in our series last winter, is back by popular demand in an expanded version that allows more time for exploration and discussion. Morgan will introduce a framework for thinking about our lives as a set of relationships among three dimensions—identity, purpose, and stewardship—each with its own needs, desires, and preoccupations. While these dimensions can pull us in different directions, when we are at our best, they offer us complementary perspectives that allow us to see things whole.

In this workshop, you will complete the Seeing Things Whole Profile, a survey designed to take a multi-dimensional snapshot of your life and well-being. The profile helps you explore your strengths within the three dimensions and can give you perspective around challenges you face.

You will also receive a workbook, WholeLife Aspirations and Goals, to help examine how your life purpose connects to your life choices. The workbook offers a powerful exercise for clarifying what is important to you and what you plan to do to make your dreams a reality.

Morgan is the executive director of the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning and professor of business at Augsburg College. He has served as a member of the steering committee for the Faith in the City Collaborative since its inception and serves on the boards of the Augsburg-Fairview Academy, Seeing Things Whole, and Select Learning Resources.

Forgive For Good - Convo Saturday

The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion (CCHP) is excited to host and welcome Dr. Fred Luskin to Augsburg College on Saturday 2/11/12 from 12 noon - 1 pm. Dr. Luskin, Director of the Stanford University Forgiveness Project and author of several books will be speaking on forgiveness. He will be signing his book from 11:15 - 11:45 am.

In a society that often gets caught up in cycles of blame and complaint, Dr. Luskin reminds us of the healing power of forgiveness. Studies show that there are measurable spiritual and medical benefits of being able to let go. Dr. Luskin's own research shows that forgiveness reduces all the negative emotions around depression and poor health and leads to a higher level of confidence, compassion and hopefulness.

Please plan to attend the convocation from 12 noon - 1 pm in the Chapel on Saturday 2/11 and learn more about forgiveness. If you have questions, please contact the CCHP office at 612-330-1707. More information on Dr. Luskin and his work can be found at www.learningtoforgive.com
