Ideas about Inclusiveness


This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how to create an inclusive learning community that values all of its members. It includes discussions of teaching, advising, and coaching skills; and dialogues about specific differences and how they impact a sense of inclusiveness. This series includes a number of well-received sessions presented at the Creating and Inclusive Campus Conference last May.

The remaining spring sessions will be held on Mondays 12:00-1:15.

CTL Grant Application Due Dates


ALL Professional Travel Applications due February 1
We have almost reached the limit for professional travel grants for this academic year. If you would like to receive a grant for travel this spring, you must submit your application no later than February 1. Use the professional travel grant application on the CTL website (http://www.augsburg.edu/ctl/forms.html).

Hoversten Peace Seminar Applications due Feb 1
Faculty-Staff-Student Global Learning Experience
The next biennial Hoversten Peace Seminar will be June 1-9, 2012 in El Salvador. This is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to experience a Center for Global Education (CGE) program together, at a subsidized cost ($1090 for faculty and staff, $890 for students). The deadline for applications is February 1. More information and the application form are available from Andrea Dvorak (dvorak@augsburg.edu) or Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu).

Faculty Summer Scholarship Grant Applications due March 15
Two Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grants ($4000) and two Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants ($2000) are available to support faculty summer scholarship activities. Applications should be submitted electronically no later than March 15. For more information and to receive an application form, contact Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu.)

Instructional & Course Design Grant Proposals due March 15
Up to eight Instructional and Course Design Grants ($3000 each) are available to support faculty summer course design activities, using L. Dee Fink’s Creating Significant Learning Experiences and D. Randy Garrison & Norman D. Vaughan’s Blended Learning in Higher Education. The purpose of these grants is to support the development of instructional design skills, as well as their application to a specific course. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire serve as consultants for grant recipients. Applications are due no later than March 15. Academic Advising is Moving

The Academic Advising Office is moving to the Lindelll 227 adjacent to the Gage Center. Our office will have adjusted hours the week of January 30 – February 3 to allow for the move. Hours for the week of are:

Monday, January 30: Open in the Enrollment Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday, January 31: Closed
Wednesday, February 1: Closed
Thursday, February 2: Closed

Students: Your Bill is Available Online

Students, your January billing statement is available online. Back in September our office went green and stopped sending paper billing statements in the mail. We opted to make them available exclusively online through your Augnet, Records and Registration account. Parents who have been given guest access to your account are also able to view your billing statements online.

Not sure where to find your statement? Log into Augnet, Records and Registration and select the "Make a Payment/Account Activity" link. They will be located under the "Your Bills" section. We always send out an email when the newest statement is available.

URGO Summer Research Applications Available Online

The application for URGO summer research is now available.

Spend your summer doing something you love while enhancing your resume for grad school. Apply for a full- or part- time URGO summer research grant working on your own research or creative question, or a professor's current project. Gain valuable research, writing and presentation skills, and the opportunity to present your project during Augsburg's annual Zyzzogeton poster session. Open to all disciplines.

Zyzzogeton Poster Session Registration

Calling all student researchers: participate in the Zyzzogeton Poster Fair -sponsored by LSAMP, McNair & URGO.

What you need to know:
Deadline for Registration (includes an abstract of your research or creative activity): February 24th, 2012
*You do not have to have done research with URGO to participate.

URGO/McNair/LSAMP will cover the cost of posters submitted by Wednesday, March 28. Printing costs for posters submitted after March 28th will not be covered. To submit your poster, email it to urgo@augsburg.edu.

Work with your faculty mentor to develop and edit your poster. If you want assistance with designing or editing your poster please attend a poster making workshop on Feb. 15 OR March 8 from 4-5:15 pm in SVE 201.

If you would like help reviewing your poster, make an appointment prior to Friday, March 16. Appointments can be made by e-mailing urgo@augsburg.edu.

Teaching Assistant Opportunities in China

Augsburg’s partner college, the United International College (UIC) in Zhuhai, China, is recruiting college graduates from Augsburg to assist in teaching English to undergraduate students. Augsburg graduates in any discipline may apply for a one year teaching assistantship (TA) to begin in August of 2012. Responsibilities include tutoring, reviewing papers and leading co-curricular club activities. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 and an excellent command of written and spoken English. Peace Scholar Program/Scholarship Applications

Undergraduate students are invited to apply for the Peace Prize Forum Peace Scholars program. Two students from Augsburg will be selected to participate in the program with seven scholars from the four other colleges in The Peace Prize Forum consortium. The scholars will participate in a six-week summer school program at the University of Oslo, Norway, designed to deepen their understanding of issues related to peace, justice, democracy, and human rights. The scholars will participate in the Peace Prize Forum and will be advocates for the annual forum and other peace activities on the Augsburg campus.
Criteria and Application:
• Strong academic record with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
• 1,000 word essay articulating the applicant's interest in peace issues, evidence of commitment to peace study and/or activism, and goals for being a peace scholar.
• Open to full-time first year, sophomore or junior undergraduate students.
• Two letters of recommendation—one from a faculty member and another from either a faculty or staff member.
• Applications are due February 20, 2012.

The Phillips Scholars Program is administered by the Minnesota Private College Fund in partnership with the financial aid offices of 16 private colleges and universities. The program is funded by the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation which recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to create a better life for those with unmet needs.

Selection criteria includes:
2.75+ GPA
Must be a sophomore in the 2011-2012 academic year
Demonstrate current financial need
Committed to designing and implementing your own community service project

Scholarship total including stipend is $16,500
Junior Year Scholarship $6,000
Senior Year Scholarship $6,000
Summer 2013 Stipend $4,000

Gage Center Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting

Date: Wednesday, February 1st, 11:15 to 11:30 A.M.

All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the ribbon cutting with the Gage and Groves families, and grand opening of the Gage Center for Student Success. We will meet in the Gage Center on the link level of the Lindell Library at 11:00 A.M., and the ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony will begin promptly at 11:15 A.M. Following the ceremony there will be an open house in the staff offices of the Gage Center.

Free Urban Farming Classes, Tues 6-8, 3 More Left

Ally Training I & II are offered to all faculty, staff, and students at Augsburg College to gain knowledge, skills, and resources around being intentionally supportive of LGBTQIA communities. Participants will learn about LGBTQIA history and culture, confront myths and stereotypes, discuss heterosexual and gender-conforming privilege, discuss potential scenarios, ask questions in a safe environment, and discuss next steps on how to be an effective ally to LGBTQIA individuals at Augsburg. Ally Training II continues on what was discussed in Ally Training I and looks at how gender and sexuality intersect with race, class, ability, age, and other identities.

You don't need to attend both trainings, but it's recommended that you have attended Ally Training I before signing up for Ally Training II. To RSVP for either one, please email Michael Grewe at grewe@augsburg.edu.
