Study Abroad in CUBA Fall 2012

So far and yet so foreign, Cuba remains an intriguing and fascinating country only 90 miles away from the coast of Miami.

Join our "History, Culture, and Politics of Cuba" this fall 2012:earn 4 Augsburg credits, and:

- Learn about decision-making processes and citizenship rights, the role of mass organizations, collective rights, and the meaning of community.

- Explore social justice as it relates to wealth production, including discussion of market mechanisms, socialization, and material versus moral incentives.

- Meet artists and radio personalities, people involved with the US Interest Section, women leaders from various sectors, students from the University of Havana, and members of the Cuban Council of Churches.

- Live in Havana with a Cuban family to experience life in Cuba and improve your Spanish language proficiency.

Well-Being Series

CTL sponsors a series focused on well-being. It includes a broad look at well-being based on Rath & Harter's book Well-Being: The Five Essential Elements. This monthly series is held 12:00-1:30 pm on the second or third Friday in the Augsburg Room, and includes a copy of the book and a diagnostic. It consists of the following spring sessions:

February 17 – Financial Well-Being (Ashok Kapoor and Stephanie Ruckel)
March 16 – Physical Well-Being (Tony Clapp)

CTL Grant Application Due Dates

Hoversten Peace Seminar Applications due February 1
The next biennial Hoversten Peace Seminar will be June 1-9, 2012 in El Salvador. This is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to experience a Center for Global Education (CGE) program together, at a subsidized cost ($1090 for faculty and staff, $890 for students). Faculty Summer Scholarship Grant Applications due March 15
Two Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants ($4000) and two Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants ($2000) are available to support faculty summer scholarship activities. Instructional & Course Design Grant Proposals due March 15
Up to eight Instructional and Course Design Grants ($3000 each) are available to support faculty summer course design activities, using L. Dee Fink's Creating Significant Learning Experiences and D. Randy Garrison & Norman D. Vaughan's Blended Learning in Higher Education. The purpose of these grants is to support the development of instructional design skills, as well as their application to a specific course. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire serve as consultants for grant recipients. Applications are due no later than March 15. Spring Mindful Dialogue and Reading Circles

Mindful Dialogues – A New Culture of Learning
Douglas Thomas and John Seeley Brown's A New Culture of Learning: Cultivating the Imagination for a World of Constant Change, led by Annette Gerten.

Mindful Dialogues is a series of conversations designed to collectively examine issues relevant to higher education. During the spring, is leading dialogues on. James Duderstadt, President Emeritus of the University of Michigan described this work as, "A provocative and extremely important new paradigm of a 'culture of learning,' appropriate for a world characterized by continual change. This is a must read for anyone interested in the future of education."

All sessions are held from 2:00-3:30 on Thursdays in Lindell 202. Each session includes a facilitated conversation about the reading and healthy snacks. Remaining sessions will be held:

February 16 – Learning in the Collective and The Personal With the Collective, and (Ch. 4-5)
March 15 – We Know More Than We Can Say; Knowing, Making, and Playing; and Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out (Ch. 6-8)
April 12 – A New Culture of Learning for a World of Constant Change (Ch. 9)

The Humanities and Democracy
Martha Nussbaum's Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities, organized by Marty Stortz and Merilee Klemp.

In this brief, but rich book, Martha Nussbaum argues the importance of the humanities to democracy. She believes that Americans increasingly treat education as though its primary goal were to teach students to be economically productive rather than to think critically and become knowledgeable and empathic citizens. She argues that this focus on profitable skills has eroded our ability to criticize authority, reduced our sympathy with the marginalized and different, and damaged our competence to deal with complex global problems. The loss of these basic capacities jeopardizes the health of democracy.

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in sessions to discuss this book and take a trip to St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN to hear Nussbaum lecture on February 23rd. By asking faculty/staff to lead each session, we hope not only to discuss her thesis, but to demonstrate it. Remaining sessions will be held:

New York Times columnist Brooks attempts in The Social Animal to explain why so many of our contemporary social problems and inequalities have proven so intractable. Weaving insights from sociology, psychology, history and brain science into an engaging narrative reminiscent of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Emile (a classic study of how people learn), Brooks tries to "explain how these findings about the deepest recesses of our minds should change the way we see ourselves, raise our kids, conduct business, teach, manage our relationships and practice politics." His work is certainly not without critics, but his insights and findings can be valuable to educators, who grapple on a daily basis with the implications of his observation that "we're not rational animals, or laboring animals; we're social animals. We emerge out of relationships and live to bond with each other and connect to larger ideas."

Ideas about Inclusiveness

This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how to create an inclusive learning community that values all of its members. It includes discussions of teaching, advising, and coaching skills; and dialogues about specific differences and how they impact a sense of inclusiveness. This series includes a number of well-received sessions presented at the Creating and Inclusive Campus Conference last May.

Writing Lab Opens Next Monday

The Augsburg College Writing Lab, located in Lindell Library (street level, left of the circulation desk), will open for winter trimester and spring semester on Monday, Jan. 23. Last term, tutors in the lab conducted almost 1300 sessions working with students on their writing assignments. Tutors can help writers at any stage of their writing process. No appointments are taken; just stop by. Hours are as follows:

The Staff Senate invites the community to nominate staff at Augsburg in order to acknowledge their accomplishments and contributions. The recipients of the Staff Recognition Award will be recognized at the Staff Appreciation Event, March 8th.

To nominate a member of the staff, please complete the Nomination Form, including two letters of recommendation. The nomination form and letters are due by Friday, February 17, at 4:00pm to Missy Motl (CB 314).

This award is intended to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission statement of the college through their actions. That's right, as an Augsburg student you can get up to TEN free counseling sessions each academic year. The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion located in the house on the corner of 21st & 7th has five professional counselors available to meet with you -- Nancy, Beth, Jon, Christine and Norma.

Counseling is a great place to go when you need to talk to someone who is objective and who may be able to help come up with new ways to look at things. It's all confidential, too - what you talk about at CCHP stays at CCHP!!

Auditions: "The Farce of the Fart"

All Augsburg students are invited to audition for "The Farce of the Fart", to be performed at Mardi Gras Madrigals on February 21.

"The Farce of the Fart" is the opening play in a newly-published collection of plays, entitled "The Farce of the Fart and Other Ribaldries: Twelve Medieval French Plays in Modern English," edited and translated Jody Enders (2011).

Terry Jones — former Monty Python member and close friend of Augsburg's Medieval Studies program — describes the collected plays as follows: "Scurrilous, sexy, stupid, satirical, scatological, side-splitting, and probably something else beginning with 's,' Jody Enders's translation of twelve French farces is a real discovery that goes a long way to re-adjusting our perception of the Middle Ages. Enders is a great champion of comedy at its most vulgar and hilarious. She points out that however silly or banal these farces may appear to us, they nonetheless confront the real controversies of their day over the law, politics, religion, social order, or the battle of the sexes."

"The Farce of the Fart" deals with two spouses locked in the eternal conflict of "who farted?" Things escalate so far that husband and wife eventually take each other to court. High comedy ensues, complete with lots of gaseous sound effects.

This short Commedia piece will be performed at Augsburg's Mardi Gras Madrigals, on Tuesday, February 21 — Mardi Gras! This Augsburg tradition features madrigal music, story telling, jugglers, and a full medieval feast, eaten without utensils, of course.

Nathan Keepers will direct. Mr. Keepers, formerly of Theatre de la Jeune Lune, is now an Artistic Associate with The Moving Company. This is a rare opportunity to work with and learn from one of the Twin Cities finest comic actors.

Auditions will be held on Friday, January 27, 3:40pm, in Oren Gateway 114. An audition sign up sheet is on the door of the main-stage theatre. For more info, contact Phil Adamo, adamo@augsburg.edu.

"Sweet Homes in Alabama" Alternative Spring Break

Registration is now open for this year's Alternative Spring Break service trip to Mobile, Alabama.

A group of 35 Auggies will be able to serve through Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Alabama from March 17-24, 2012. This trip continues our commitment to help in the Gulf Coast and offers up an amazing opportunity for the participants to focus on service, vocation, and interfaith collaboration in a memorable way. Film Screening: Al Karnak Jan. 26 7pm OGC 100

January 25 is the one-year anniversary of the protests in Tahrir Square which brought down the regime of Hosni Mubarerk. On Thurs., Jan. 26 at 7pm, join us in OGC 100 for a discussion of film, literature, and politics, with a screening of the 1975 Egyptian film, Al Karnak, based on the novella by Naguib Mahfouz (the Nobel Prize winning author of Cairo Modern). The film, originally banned because of its critique of the Nasser regime, is a story of young revolutionaries who become disillusioned with policies and practices of the Egyptian government and run afoul of its infamous secret police. The film provides a surprisingly timely backdrop to the events of the Arab spring. Augsburg faculty will provide brief background on the film and current events in Egypt, and there will be an opportunity to discuss the film afterward. Somali tea and baklava will be provided. The event, part of Augsburg's "Arab Spring" events, is sponsored by the English Department, Political Science Department, and Batalden Program, and is free and open to the public.

The retreat will take place on Saturday, March 31, 2012, 9:45AM-5:00 PM at The Marsh Center for Balance & Fitness in Minnetonka. Participants will receive a half-hour long massage, snacks, lunch, and several tools for personal assessments and discovery.

If you are interested in attending, please email Lonna Field at fieldl@augsburg.edu for the registration form. We ask that students pay $30 for the day-long event. Space is limited to 20 students, seated on a first come, first served basis.

Ally Training I & II are offered to all faculty, staff, and students at Augsburg College to gain knowledge, skills, and resources around being intentionally supportive of LGBTQIA communities. Participants will learn about LGBTQIA history and culture, confront myths and stereotypes, discuss heterosexual and gender-conforming privilege, discuss potential scenarios, ask questions in a safe environment, and discuss next steps on how to be an effective ally to LGBTQIA individuals at Augsburg. Ally Training II continues on what was discussed in Ally Training I and looks at how gender and sexuality intersect with race, class, ability, age, and other identities.

You don't need to attend both trainings, but it's recommended that you have attended Ally Training I before signing up for Ally Training II. To RSVP for either one, please email Michael Grewe at grewe@augsburg.edu.

Sadie Curtis to Retire

Sadie Curtis, Director, Access Center, has announced her retirement - and after 24 excellent years of care and service to students and the Augsburg community, she will retire as of Tues., Jan. 31 - a couple days later than the earlier announcement.

Valek featured in NCAA All Access videos

Augsburg College wrestler Tony Valek (SR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) is one of the subjects of a video series on the NCAA.com website, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a student-athlete.

So far, there have been two videos produced in the "NCAA All Access" series regarding Valek, on January 4 and January 19. More videos will be produced through the remainder of the wrestling season.

A two-time national tournament runner-up and three-time national tournament qualifier, Valek is 18-0 on the season and currently ranked No. 1 nationally at 149 pounds in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll. Of his 18 wins this season, 16 have been bonus-point victories (eight pins, one technical fall, seven major decisions).

Augsburg returns to action this Saturday (1/21) at the Wabash College Max Servies Duals in Crawfordsville, Ind.
