Gilmer Named Scholar All-American

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2011/12/23/msoc122311.aspx?path=msoc

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College men's soccer player Chad Gilmer (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Team as a second-team College Division recipient, it was announced recently.

A biology major with a 3.59 grade-point average, Gilmer was also a first-team selection to the NSCAA's College Division Scholar All-North/Central Region squad, one of five Auggies to earn Scholar All-Region honors.

Defenders Tyler Heaps (JR, St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) and David Scheller (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.), midfielder Josh Sweeney (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and forward Gottlieb Uahengo (JR, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) were all named as honorable-mention selections to the Scholar All-Region squad.

Gilmer is the third NSCAA Scholar All-American during head coach Greg Holker's eight-year tenure at Augsburg. Alex Hildebrandt earned Scholar All-America honors in both 2008 and 2009. Holker has now coached 12 NSCAA Scholar All-Region players at Augsburg.

The Scholar All-America award is the latest honor for Gilmer. Earlier this year, he earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors for the third straight season, after being named All-MIAC in both 2010 and 2011 and All-MIAC honorable mention in 2009. The 2010 MIAC Player of the Year, Gilmer was also named to the NSCAA Division III All-North Region first team for the second year in a row in 2011. He was also named to the Academic All-MIAC squad in 2010.

Playing in 14 games this season after missing four games due to injury, Gilmer continued to shine as one of the most versatile players on the team, scoring three goals for six points on the season. He started the season as one of the backbones of Augsburg's defense, then contributed throughout the field after returning from a three-game stretch due to injury late in the season.

In his three seasons at Augsburg (53 games, 52 starts), Gilmer now has 12 goals and six assists for 30 career points.

The Scholar All-Region honor was the second academic honor for Heaps this season. A mathematics major with a 3.94 grade-point average, Heaps was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 (Division III) squad in November. He was an Academic All-MIAC honoree in 2010.

A defender, Heaps started all 18 games for the Auggies this season, playing in 1,480 of the team's 1,680 minutes (88.0 percent), the second-most minutes played of any Auggie this year. He contributed two assists this year -- an assist on the lone goal in a 1-0 home win over St. Thomas on Sept. 24, and an assist on the first goal in a 3-0 win over Hamline on Oct. 21.

Heaps transferred to Augsburg last season after playing his initial collegiate campaign at North Park (Ill.). He has started 38 of his 39 games in two seasons as an Auggie, with four assists. Including his season at North Park in 2009, he has one goal and six assists in 56 collegiate games (49 starts).

A psychology and religion major with a 3.41 grade-point average, Scheller appeared in 14 games (nine starts) as a defender for the Auggies, playing in 887 minutes (63.3 minutes per-game) during the 2011 season.

In his four seasons at Augsburg (68 games, 45 starts), Scheller scored three goals with six assists for 12 points, averaging 62.9 minutes per-game (4,278 minutes played) in his career.

A finance major with a 3.57 grade-point average, Sweeney led the Auggies in goals scored this season with four, adding an assist for a nine-point campaign. Sweeney claimed his first collegiate hat trick with a three-goal effort in Augsburg's 7-1 win at Bethel on Sept. 14, scored the lone goal in a 1-0 home win over St. Thomas on Sept. 24, and assisted on a goal in a 3-0 win at Wisconsin-Platteville on Oct. 2.

In two seasons at Augsburg (39 games, 20 starts, 2,060 minutes played), Sweeney has eight goals and three assists for 19 points, including three game-winning goals. He had one goal in five games in his initial college season at Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2009.

A physics major with a 3.48 grade-point average, Uahengo tied for the team lead in total points in 2011, with three goals and three assists for nine points. He had two game-winning goals this season – the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Whitman (Wash.) on Sept. 8 and the opening goal in a 3-0 win at St. Mary's on Oct. 29. He also scored a goal and had an assist in a 3-0 win over Hamline on Oct. 21, and assisted on goals in a 7-1 win at Bethel on Sept. 14 and a 3-1 win over the Milwaukee (Wis.) School of Engineering on Sept. 17.

In his Augsburg career (47 games, 17 starts, 1,764 minutes played), Uahengo has six goals and four assists for 16 points, including three game-winning goals.

Augsburg finished 10-5-3 overall, 6-3-1 in MIAC play in 2011, reaching the MIAC postseason playoffs for the fourth time in the last six years. Augsburg has won 69 games (69-33-15, .654 winning percentage) during the past six seasons.

This season, Augsburg also earned NSCAA Team Academic Award honors for the sixth straight season, with a 3.29 team grade-point average.
