Riverside Ave is Open

Riverside Ave. reopened on Friday from 23rd Ave. S. to Franklin Ave.

While emergency and other vehicles no longer will be routed through campus, please continue to use extra caution as drivers from within and outside the community gradually return to their pre-construction travel routes. It is likely to take drivers a bit of time to remember that Riverside Ave. is open again.

During the next couple of business days, staff will be updating information related to campus parking and directions.

First-Year Students: Take the I-Term

The Integrated Term (I-Term) is being offered this Spring 2012, and is open to all students. The I-Term is a unique opportunity to explore issues related to the environment, consumerism, and social justice!

We tackle big issues, we get out into the city, we have guest speakers, we debate, and we learn!

The official title: "Fate of the Earth 101: Consumption of Food, Fuel and Media in U.S. Culture."

Students receive credit for three courses:
* ENG 270 "Environmental Literature"
* POL 170 "Law in the U.S."
* SOC 121 "Introduction to Human Society"

The I-Term will be taught by Lars Christiansen, Sarah Combellick-Bidney, and John Harkness.

Being Thankful in the Writing Lab

Because the library is closing at 5 pm on Wednesday, the Writing Lab will not have evening hours on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 23). However, there will be regular hours on Wednesday until 5 pm and, also, regular hours on Sunday, Nov. 27. As we near the end of the term, we are thankful for the almost 900 student visits just this fall semester/trimester. After Thanksgiving, the lab will maintain its regular schedule through Wednesday of finals week, Dec. 14.

Most Restrooms Will Be "All Gender" on Mon, Nov 21

On Monday, November 21, the majority of bathrooms on campus will be temporarily designated as "all gender" in order to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance. This means people of all gender identities may use these facilities.

Transgender Day of Remembrance honors all of those who have been the target of harassment or violence for being transgender or gender non-conforming. Converting the majority of restrooms on campus is aimed at highlighting the lack of gender-neutral facilities on campus, as well as the harassment many students, staff, faculty, and visitors encounter on campus and the greater community in areas such as gendered restrooms.

Gendered (female / male) restrooms will still be available in the following locations on campus during the day:
• Basement of Foss Center
• Kennedy Center (all floors)
• 3rd floor of Oren Gateway Center
• 3rd floor of Science Building
• Lower-level of Christensen Center (women's only)

Queer and Straight in Unity also invites all students, staff, and faculty to a continued discussion around all-gender bathrooms and other issues facing transgender communities in that evening at 7:00pm in Marshall Room.

Congrats to Emerging Leaders Program Graduates

We would like to congratulate the 30 first-year students who have graduated from the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) this fall, the highest number of students who have ever participated in the program!

ELP is a 10-week leadership program designed to develop comprehensive leadership and educational experiences of students. The program strives to accomplish this through the development of, exposure to and participation in social, cultural, multicultural, intellectual, recreational, community service, leadership abilities and campus governance involvement.

A special thanks to ELP mentors Nate Althoff, Elan Dillner, and Susie Mechtel, who planned and led the classes, as well as Kofi Abaidoo-Asiedu and Joshua Peaslee, who both coordinated the program.

For the 2012 MLK Convocation on Monday, January 16th, the MLK Committee would like to invite Augsburg students, staff, and faculty to participate through music, dance, spoken word, and short theatrical performances. Three pieces will be chosen by our Emmy Award-winning guest host, T. Mychael Rambo. All pieces should be about 3 minutes in length and should relate to Martin Luther King, Jr., peace, or social justice in some way.

East African Women's Center Winter Clothes Drive

Seeing as winter is fast approaching, we have seen the need in our own community for winter clothing. The East African Women's Center, located at 1525 South 4th Street (in the Riverside Plaza highrise complex), strives to empower East African women and provide a sense of community through families and friends. We as Augsburg College students are recognizing their much needed presence as part of our community. Thus, it would be most helpful if we could help donate winter clothing to the Center.

WHAT WE NEED:
- Winter coats/jackets
- Hats
- Gloves/Mittens
- Boots

*Clothes are preferably for women but children's and men's clothes will be accepted!

Tellabration! Storytelling Festival Nov 25 &26

Hi Folks! I am SO excited to be involved with Tellabration!2011 event at Open Book (1011 Washington Ave S)on the 25th and 26th. there will be 2 storytelling concerts, an adult oriented one on Friday Nov 25th and a Children's storytelling concert on Saturday am. there will be workshops and storytelling throughout the day and story slam with cash prizes Saturday night. for more information go to www.northstarstorytelling.org, but I will be telling a Sicilian folktale, Sorfarina, at 230 pm on the 26th. Much of it is free except the workshops and the 2 main concerts; It promises to be a great family friendly activity.

Host Families Needed

Hello! My name is Melinda McCannell-Unger, Host Family Coordinator for InfoLink International Education Institute. Currently, we are looking for warm, loving, families to host some wonderful students from China! I work in partnership with the University of Minnesota on a short term semester at UMN called Education for a Global Citizen program. The University of Minnesota provides the academic program for the students and we, InfoLink, coordinate recruitment in China and housing here in Minnesota. We have about 15 college age students (18-23 yrs) from China visiting our country to attend this full time study program for Spring Semester 2012 (Mid-January to Mid-May).

The students are here to learn about America first hand by living with an American family and to practice their English. Beyond what they will learn in the classroom they are encouraged to spend time with you and your family to really understand what makes America work on every level.

We are looking for families to take one (or possibly two) students (two same gender students sharing a bedroom is OK) into their home. The simple requirements will be that you provide a separate bedroom and bathroom for the students (the bathroom may be shared with any or all other family members), an English environment-and your friendship. Students will be provided with a bus pass: which is good on MTC buses as well as the U of M Campus Connector. We require host families to live within and hour commute to the University of Minnesota.

Beyond the pleasure of making new friends and building the bonds between our country and China, you will be paid a monthly stipend of $400 per student.
