Writing Lab Is Alive and Well
By the time you read this, the Augsburg College Writing Lab, located in Lindell Library (street level, left of the circulation desk), will have received over 700 visits from students just this semester. Tutors can help writers at any stage of their writing process. No appointments are taken; just stop by.
Hours are as follows:

Thanksgiving = Turkeypalooza
It's that time of the year again, where families and friends come together to dine on pretty much the exact same thing. In the tradition of Thanksgiving, the Campus Kitchen at Augsburg College plans serve hundreds of turkey-centric meals to our neighbors in need during our 8th annual Turkeypalooza celebration.
As always, we look towards members of the campus community to donate the following ingredients:
Cash or check (lets us buy all the things that aren't donated)
Turkeys
Stuffing mix
Real and instant potatoes
Real and canned pumpkins
Frozen or canned green beans
Cream of mushroom soup
French fried onions
Can you or your office mates commit to collecting one or more of these ingredients? If so, please contact Elena at eveslage@augsburg.edu to let them know what you plan to contribute, and plan to bring them in on Monday 11/14 from 11-1 pm in the Christensen Center lobby (we will also be there Tuesday if you forget on Monday). Extra food items will be passed along to the Brian Coyle food shelf by the 21st so people can still make use of them on the 24th for Thanksgiving.
All the cooking shifts and deliveries will be filled by students and others through Students Today Leaders Forever and the Honor Society's Week of Kindness. Campus Kitchen thanks them dearly for making this all happen. Unfortunately, the Brian Coyle Community Center will not be hosting the Multicultural Dinner this year, and thus it is not in our schedule as it has been in years past.

Interested in how the intersections of religion and US Mexico relations? Want to brush up your Spanish? Or just need one more credit to graduate? Consider The Church in Context, a spring semester course with travel to Mexico in Spring break. It's a YFM 316 course, but could be fascinating for religion, social work, and other majors. Annual benefit enrollment will start on Monday, November 7, 2011 and go through Friday, November 18, 2011. All forms must be turned no later than 4:00 pm on Friday, November 18.

University of California Riverside
On Friday November 11, 2011, Lorenzo Mangolini, the Assistant Professor from the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of California, Riverside is visiting the Physics Department at Augsburg College. Mr. Mangolini is advisor for McNair Scholar Thomas Lopez. Thomas just started his doctorate program Fall 2011 after graduating from Augsburg. As a McNair Scholar he conducted research in the field of Biophysics and built a Magnetic Needle viscometer, a device that is capable of measuring surface shear viscosity of a single molecular layer. Thomas is the third McNair scholar admitted with generous funding to the UC Riverside in the past three years.
Jenna Mead was accepted to the Sociology PhD. Her McNair research project with Dr. Diane Pike was spent measuring and analyzing the portrayals of Abu Ghraib prison torture internationally by viewing a number of newspaper articles from ten countries worldwide.
Zachary L. Sommer was accepted to the Sociology PhD. His McNair research was with Dr. James Vela-McConnell and he used unobtrusive participant observation to observe social interactions in Second Life, a three dimensional online virtual world. His theoretical perspective was based on the work of Randall Collins, who elaborated Goffman's idea of life as ritual.
We are excited about the McNair scholars success and we welcome Mr. Mangolini.

Phillips Scholarship Information
The Phillips Scholars Program is administered by the Minnesota Private College Fund in partnership with the financial aid offices of 16 private colleges and universities. The program is funded by the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation which recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to create a better life for those with unmet needs.
Selection criteria includes:

Must be a sophomore in the 2011-2012 academic year

The following days are paid holidays for benefit-eligible staff. College offices will be closed to the public on these days. Temporary/stipend employees are not eligible for paid holidays.

PRESIDENT'S HOLIDAYS
In addition, President Pribbenow has granted four (4) paid President's Holidays to use in December. Benefit- eligible staff should take these 4 paid days off on December 27 – December 30 (Tuesday – Friday) unless it is determined by their manager that the office needs to be open to meet the needs of students. It is expected that certain offices and services (public safety, residence life, payroll, etc) will need to remain open on some or all of these 4 days.
Divisional VPs will communicate with managers regarding staffing expectations (hours of operation, etc.) during the last week of December. For safety reasons, departments should schedule at least 2 employees to work in the office on days when the office must be open. Regular benefit- eligible staff who are required to work during December 27 – December 30 may take their President's Holidays on other work days in December or January, subject to supervisor approval. Temporary/stipend employees are not eligible for paid holidays.
CGE Offers Cuba Trip to the General Public
Have you or someone you know ever wanted to visit Cuba? With the recent issuance of a people-to-people travel license, the Center for Global Education is able to offer a programs open to the general public. People and Politics, February 4-12, 2012, builds on the success of travel seminars to Cuba from 1999-2004. This program will provide an overview of Cuban approaches to political participation, health care, food security, worker's rights, women's rights, land tenure, religion, and the economy. Living in the US, we are very closely connected to the people of Cuba and their future. Participants will learn about this island nation's political and cultural history, its traditions and its hopes for the future. The program is open to the general public but each traveler must be willing to participate in a full-time schedule of educational exchange activities while in Cuba. Exhibition Dates: October 31 – December 16, 2011
Gary Erickson's exhibition features architectural tiles that incorporate and expand on the traditional Chinese technique of stamped impressions and under-glaze decals. Inspired by his travels to Jingdezhen, China, Erickson alters, cuts, and masks the decals in a process similar to printmaking to create a layered effect on the tiles as he explores imagery from his travels and nature.

3 Auggies Earn MIAC Women's Soccer Honors

Three Augsburg College women's soccer players earned honors from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their play during the 2011 season, it was announced on Thursday.
Augsburg forward Bri Clark (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) was named to the All-MIAC squad, while midfielder Bri Dorale (JR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors. Midfielder Katie Jacobson (SR, St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. It was the first all-conference honor for each player.

Seven Augsburg College men's soccer players earned honors from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their play during the 2011 season, it was announced on Thursday.
Earning All-MIAC honors were defenders Chad Gilmer (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Peter Loyd (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). Four Auggies earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors -- forward Ahmed Gobana (SR, Burnsville, Minn.), defender Mathias Macody Lund (SO, Bergen, Norway), goalkeeper Will Morlock (SO, Grand Haven, Mich.), and midfielder Peter Osborn (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS). Midfielder Matt Bowman (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Auggie Football at Metrodome on Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College will host Bethel University in the Auggies' final "home" football game of the season on Saturday (11/12) at 1 p.m. at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.
Limited parking is available in the Metrodome upper lot, adjacent to the Vikings' ticket office. Lot entrance is off of 11th Avenue South, near the intersection with 5th Street South. There is also ample parking (payment required) in ramps and lots around the Metrodome.
Tickets will be sold at Gate D (adjacent to the South end of the parking lot) starting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Entry gates will also open at 11:30 a.m. Pass gate is also at Gate D.
Tickets will be handled just like a regular Augsburg home game. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for students. Augsburg, A-Club and MIAC passes will be accepted. All Augsburg students, faculty and staff get into any Augsburg regular-season home game free with ID. Augsburg students, faculty and staff MUST bring their student/staff ID with them in order to receive free admission. There will be no presale of tickets prior to the game.
All fan seating will be on the east site (football press box side), with Augsburg seating in Sections 109-113 and Bethel seating in Sections 104-108.
If you can't make it to the game, you can follow the action live online, through Augsburg's live webcast (Stretch Internet -- Augsburg GameCentral portal).
Augsburg will be making its 24th football appearance at the Metrodome since 1983, and Saturday's game will be the sixth time Augsburg and Bethel have met at the Metrodome. The Auggies have a 8-15 record in games played at the Metrodome and a 9-15 record all-time in games played indoors. Augsburg also won an NCAA Division III playoff game over Concordia-Moorhead at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., in 1997.
3 Auggies Named Academic All-District in Football

Three Augsburg College football players were named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 (Division III) squad, it was announced on Thursday.
Tight end Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.), offensive lineman Eric Dooley (JR, Eagan, Minn.) and linebacker Bryce Vee (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) earned a spot on the 24-player Academic All-District squad, made up of Division III student-athletes from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Dooley earned Academic All-District honors for the second straight year, after earning second-team honors in 2010. It's the first Academic All-District honor for both Carl and Vee.
